JOB PURPOSE

The Eye Bank Nurse works as a CEBT (Certified Eye Bank Technician) and as a physician designee in the release of corneal tissues for transplant. This includes screening donor medical and eye bank records to assess for donor and tissue suitability plus performing microscopic exams of the corneal tissue.

The Eye Bank Nurse also participates in the recovery of ocular tissue for transplantation and all other associated duties with corneal recovery.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Active registration with ANBLPN.
  • Successful completion of an LPN program.
  • Critical Care background an asset.
  • Experience in ocular and/or tissue banking.
  • Certification with the Eye Bank Association of America as a CEBT.
  • Valid driver's license and willingness to travel within zone 2 and/or throughout NB as needed.
  • Good work record. Ability to attend work on a regular basis.
  • Ability to perform the duties of the position.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Actively participates in clinical, operational, training and quality activities to support ocular procurement, processing and distribution
  • Utilizes her/his clinical and technical knowledge to provide guidance, expertise, training and orientation to the New Brunswick Eye Bank Technicians and other health care professionals as applicable.
  • Performs the work of a Certified Eye Bank Technician (CEBT) and as a physician Designee in the release of ocular tissue for transplant.
  • Perform microscopic exams of the cornea.
  • Performs the recovery of corneas and all other related recovery duties and responsibilities.
  • Supports and participates in the NBOTP Quality Assurance Program
  • Supports the delivery of the highest quality and safety of tissues, ensuring practice is in adherence with regulatory requirements, as well as quality system and program standards.
  • Ability to work effectively as a team member and independently with minimal supervision within a defined scope of practice.
  • Effectively communicates and collaborates with the Manager, Medical Director and other staff members (NBOTP Staff and NB Eye Bank Technicians).
  • Contributes to an empowering team environment that supports professional growth, collaboration and innovation.
  • Provides nursing expertise to support cornea donation and transplantation related NBOTP activities to New Brunswick Eye Bank Technicians and other allied health care professionals.
  • Other related duties assigned by the Nurse Manager.
  • Supports donor families by obtaining consent and discussing cornea donation with families/next-of-kin.
  • Liaises with local and other provincial multi-disciplinary health care facilities/professionals to assist in determining donor eligibility of each potential donor. Consults with coroners, pathologists and family physicians in the coordination and retrieval of corneas.
  • Responsible to complete medical chart reviews, medical/social/behavioral screening (Donor Risk Assessment Interview), and physical examination to determine each potential donor's eligibility for cornea donation. Responsible for the interpretation of the above documentation.
  • Monitors for potential adverse outcomes/reactions that could affect patient safety and require reporting to Health Canada and EBAA.
  • Ensures appropriate documentation and data entry.
  • Other duties include the distribution and tracking of corneas for transplantation and performing procedures required for cornea processing
