Reporting to the Professional Practice Director, the Sterile Compounding Assessor is responsible for sterile compounding inspections primarily in Edmonton, Central Alberta, and Northern Alberta, with some inspections in Calgary and Southern Alberta as needed. As this is a field-based position, travel throughout Alberta is required and will include overnight stays.


In conjunction with a Pharmacy Practice Consultant, the Sterile Compounding Assessor will conduct assessments in accordance with the Health Professions Act (HPA) and the Pharmacy and Drug Act (PDA). This includes assessing pharmacy practice, operations and systems; and educating licensees, pharmacy directors, pharmacy staff and proprietors during assessments to ensure safe, effective and responsible pharmacy practice. The Sterile Compounding Assessor provides subject matter expertise in both sterile compounding and non-sterile compounding. Additionally, the Sterile Compounding Assessor will provide input in developing and implementing educational programs and tools to promote quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives in sterile compounding.


Key duties and responsibilities

  • Providing sterile compounding consultations to pharmacies which include the following:
    o Developing an effective sterile compounding assessment plan including efficient scheduling of assessments.
    o Collaborating with the Pharmacy Practice Consultant responsible for each respective pharmacy being assessed.
    o Performing sterile compounding assessments, in conjunction with Pharmacy Practice Consultant team, to ensure compliance with legislation and Alberta College of Pharmacy (ACP) standards.
    o Completing and providing sterile compounding assessment documentation, following conclusion of the sterile compounding assessment.
    o Providing an overall evaluation of compliance with practice and operations standards of the pharmacies' sterile compounding practices following conclusion of the sterile compounding assessment.
    o Providing input into ACP's assessment process.
    o Identifying and evaluating sources that may negatively affect patient safety such as sterile compounding operational systems, human resources, and the general sterile compounding practice environment.
    o Reporting to the Professional Practice Director events, occurrences, sources, and trends in pharmacies' sterile compounding practices that may affect patient safety.
    o Promoting a culture of patient safety and continuous quality improvement by educating licensees, their pharmacy staff and management teams regarding legislation, ACP standards, and best practices or guidelines.
    o Collaborating with licensees and pharmacy staff on developing practice change goals.
    o Utilizing reporting tools to monitor achievement of practice change goals.

Participating in individual and group training and development sessions as needed.

  • Participating in Professional Practice department meetings as needed.
  • Responding to inquiries related to sterile compounding assessments from registrants in an efficient and effective manner.
  • Collaborating proactively with the ACP team to achieve ACP's mission and goals.
  • Creating, capturing, and retaining documents (electronic and hard copy) as per records management policy.
  • Other duties as required.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a pharmacy technician diploma.
  • Eligible for licensure with the Alberta College of Pharmacy on the pharmacy technician register.
  • Current sterile compounding practice to be maintained throughout contract.
  • At least five years' experience in sterile compounding pharmacy practice (hospital or community).
  • A valid Alberta driver's license and a satisfactory driving record.

The following attributes are considered assets:

  • Experience in a supervisory or management role.
  • Experience in patient safety, quality assurance, root-cause analysis, training, and education.
