Why join us?

You've got great skills. And you want to use them in an organization where you know what you do every day matters. We get that.
We also know that ensuring Ontarians have access to affordable and reliable power doesn't happen by accident. So we give you the tools, flexibility and support you need to achieve your goals, and development opportunities to help you grow. You'll thrive in a collaborative, team-based environment that values your unique skills and experiences - and recognizes that when you do better, we become even better too.

Who we are

The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) works at the centre of the province's power system, ensuring Ontarians have access to reliable and cost-effective electricity when and where they need it. We operate the province's electricity grid 24/7, design, run and oversee the wholesale electricity markets, and plan and prepare to meet Ontario's electricity needs - now and into the future.

The opportunity

The Senior Analyst is accountable to the Supervisor, Contract Management in the Legal Resources and Corporate Governance (LRCG) division of the Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO). The Senior Analyst will primarily focus on renewable energy facilities (e.g., solar PV, wind, waterpower, etc.) and will provide value-added technical and commercial analysis for the management of contracts. The Senior Analyst will provide analytical support and recommendations to ensure that contract management requirements are fulfilled, and that documents and processes are followed to provide the best possible value to the IESO, Ontario's power system, and Ontario's ratepayers and taxpayers.

What you'll be doing

  • Support and manage contract processes, ensuring that all obligations are fulfilled in accordance with the contract requirements, culminating in successful commercial operation of facilities and post-commercial operation compliance.
  • Provide input and analysis into quantifying, mitigating, and contractually allocating risk based on understanding of risks such as permitting, financing, construction, performance, fuel, market and political.
  • Regularly use and maintain online contract database to manage ongoing contractual matters and to ensure compliance.
  • Effectively manage contract issues by meeting with IESO staff, respective contract counterparties, and when applicable, external agencies/organizations (e.g., Local Distribution Companies, Ministry, transmitters, etc.)
  • Assist in the development of standard principles, strategies and processes for existing contracts.
  • Advise on systems and procedures and recommend changes to support the successful management of contracts.
  • Provide input and analysis into quantifying, mitigating, and contractually allocating risk based on the understanding of risks such as permitting, financing, construction, performance, fuel, market and political factors.

  • Provide updates, reports, and presentations to Supervisor on a regular basis and senior management as required.
  • Support Supervisor with facility amendments or contract negotiations as required. Assist in the development of negotiation principles, strategies, and processes for existing contracts.

    Other Responsibilities

  • Interface with others - internally with the Legal, Planning, Conservation, Resource Adequacy, Corporate Services, and other IESO Departments; externally with Government and its agencies, such as the Ministry of Energy, Ministry of the Environment, Conservation and Parks, Local Distribution Companies, and with respective contract counterparties.
Conduct research on topics and issues related to electricity supply resources and renewable energy generation. Prepare and assist in the development of budgets and schedules. Assist with projects within LRCG or in other IESO departments. This includes facilitating meetings with other IESO departments. Demonstrate leadership and mentor, advise, and guide less experienced staff (i.e. junior analysts, co-op students, etc.)

Other duties or responsibilities may be assigned.

What you'll need to succeed

The education required to complete the responsibilities associated with the position is typically obtained through 4 years of university training. Knowledge of Ontario electricity including the renewable energy sector and regulatory environment. Knowledge of the technical aspects of electricity generation, including renewable forms of electricity generation (e.g. solar PV, wind, waterpower, etc.) Understanding of the various generation contracts and programs used by the IESO, (such as the Feed-In Tariff program, the Renewable Energy Standard Offer program, etc.) including the rationale and importance for each, as well as the various provisions in the contracts.
