One of the core goals of these services is to help people with mental illness develop the personal tools to lead meaningful and productive lives.

Position Summary:

The Mental Health Consultant assist individuals with mental health issues, looking for job, by conducting one-on-one interviews with them, assessing and evaluating their skills and capabilities, developing customized plans for their success, coaching them on effective work habits and professional soft skills, also following up and navigating their employment journey. They develop employment action plans and provide clients with consultation in identifying suitable career opportunities, job searching, preparing the application, and handling the interview meetings, in addition to their job maintenance and career development.

They also establish and develop relationships with different stakeholders in New Brunswick, and coordinate workshops and trainings in order to increase awareness about mental health, mental health issues, and necessary accommodations for workers with mental health symptoms. Moreover, they encourage communities and other public and private organizations to become partners in the provincial Employment Assistance Program.

This position will update clients' records in the database and provide regular reports to the Programs Manager of CMHA of NB.

Responsibilities:

Program and Service Delivery

  • Determine client eligibility and understand their mental health issues, and accordingly necessary coaching needs.
  • Develop service action plans.
  • Provide individual employment counseling services.
  • Adhere to the four employability dimensions (Career Decision Making, Skill Enhancement, Job Search and Employment Maintenance)
  • Interview clients to obtain employment history, educational background, and career goals.
  • Complete skills assessments and evaluations with clients to determine the interests, aptitudes, and abilities of clients.
  • Provide industry specific information to assist clients with understanding career choices and identifying suitable employment opportunities.
  • Maintain an up-to-date knowledge of current job searching methods.
  • Create detailed job search plans for clients, providing support and guidance.
  • Provide instruction regarding current job searching strategies and best practices, resources, and technology.
  • Identify barriers to employment and assist clients with such matters as job readiness skills, writing résumés and cover letters and preparing for job interviews.
  • Collect labour market information for clients regarding job openings, entry and skill requirements and other occupational information.
  • Assist clients with completing the application process for further Education.
  • Conduct pre-interview counseling sessions and assist clients with providing positive attitudes and interview readiness.
  • Assist and coach clients with obtaining training to acquire the necessary skills to attain their career goals.
  • Assist clients with problem solving, change management and stress management.
  • Provide follow-up and job maintenance.
  • Assess the need for additional assistance, such as rehabilitation, retraining, financial assistance and refer clients to the appropriate service providers.
  • Provide established workers with information on maintaining a job or moving within an organization, dealing with job dissatisfaction, or making a mid-career change.
  • Ensure that the individual is an active participant in all phases of the job placement process.
  • Perform other duties as necessary.

Networking/Raising Awareness

  • Increase awareness in organizations on the concept of mental health and related issues, its accommodations, and specific need of people with mental issue may require.
  • Building relationships with different stake holders in New Brunswick and encourage and persuade them to become partners with Employment Assistance Program.
  • Coordinating with CPCs for workshops and presentations in workplaces to increase awareness.
  • Work with potential employers to develop accommodation opportunities.
  • Provide consulting services to community groups and agencies, business, and industry, and to other organizations involved in providing community-based career planning resources.
  • Network with potential employers in the community.
  • Liaise with employers to provide for an effective client transition into employment and working environments.
  • Network with community agencies, organizations, and groups to keep them informed of the Employment Assistance Program and be involved in applicable community events offered by other organizations.
  • Partner with relevant existing community groups, organizations and agencies, both public and private, to strengthen current services and assist with the development of new opportunities.
  • Promote the Employment Assistance Program to stakeholders i.e. clients, employers, Employment Counsellors from DPETL, Case Managers and Social Workers from the Department of Social Development, Clinicians/Therapists, Addictions and Mental Health Services, other government and community agencies and the public.

Administration

  • Maintain an accurate and updated client database and files confidentially.
  • Track the client's job finding processes and applications.
  • Provide regular progress reports for organizational and individual purposes.
  • Submit quarterly and annual Targets, work plans and regular progress reports to the Programs Manager
  • Submit annual and quarterly financial monitoring reports to the Programs Manager.
  • Attend scheduled staff meetings.

Qualifications:

  • Preference will be given to candidates with Post secondary studies in the fields of Counselling, Human Services, Social Science, Education, or psychology, and one year of work experience, as a counselor. A combination of related work experience and education will be considered.
  • A valid Work Permit is mandatory for temporary residents.
  • Residency in New Brunswick (NB) or willingness to relocate is mandatory.
  • Proficiency in both English and French languages is mandatory
  • A new Criminal Record and Vulnerable Sector Check is mandatory.
  • A valid driver's license is necessary to travel within the province.

Knowledge, Abilities & Skills:

  • Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft 365 and data base is required.
  • Knowledge of Enforcing Laws, rules, and regulations is required.
  • Knowledge of Canadian Standards and Guidelines for Career Development Practitioners, Ethical Code of Canadian Counseling and Psychotherapy Association and use of Standardized and Non-Standardized Career Assessment Instruments.
  • Knowledge of theory, principles and practices of career transition, counseling, and career development is preferred.
  • Knowledge of intellectual and psychological disabilities, and mental health issues is necessary.

Working Conditions:

  • The workweek is 32 hours.
  • Flexible work schedules may be required to meet operational requirements.
  • Travel within the province and the service region is required.
  • Work in various settings or in partnership with other stakeholders is expected.
  • This position will report directly to the Programs Manager.
