How You'll Spend Your Time

The Youth Settlement Services team is seeking a young leader to join our team as Day Camp Counsellor – Recreation to support the set up and safe operation of multiple coordinated Summer Camp schedules for immigrant and refugee students, ranging from kindergarten to grade 12 as presented by IRSA during the summer.

This role collaborates across departments to build strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to promote IRSA's vision, mission and core values.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists with the preparation of activity plans for all five camps, this includes booking of activities, preparation of program supplies and equipment.
  • Supports the promotion and registration of participants for all camps.
  • Prepares campers lists, confirms their participation and tracks attendance.
  • Supervises campers at all times, whether during activities, meals, or free time. Ensures that campers are safe and following established camp rules.
  • Leads or assists in leading a variety of camp activities such as sports, arts and crafts, nature hikes, swimming, and team-building exercises. This may involve providing instruction, encouragement, and support to campers.
  • Presents as a positive behaviour example for campers, demonstrating excellent interpersonal skills, respect for others, cooperation, and enthusiasm for camp activities.
  • Helps to resolve conflict and disagreement among campers, attempting to teach them valuable life skills in communication, problem-solving, and conflict resolution.
  • Provides emotional support/guidance to campers, particular attention paid to those who are experiencing difficulties adjusting to the camp experience.
  • Ensures all campers follow established safety guidelines and protocols, including, but not limited to, the proper use of equipment (internal and external), following specific day-trip rules, and models appropriate behavior during outdoor activities.
  • Assists with all preparation and end of day, duties such as room set up and activities preparation, organizing equipment, and full clean up after activities.
  • Works collaboratively with other camp staff members and volunteers to ensure the smooth operation of the camp, excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Is committed to ongoing process review and improvement to further the efficiency of the above listed duties.

What You Bring

  • Previous experience working with children, either as a camp counselor, coach, mentor, or in another childcare-related role would be considered a strong asset.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills are essential for building positive relationships with campers, fellow counselors, and camp leadership. Counselors should be patient, empathetic, enthusiastic, and able to work effectively in a team environment.
  • Camp counselors need to demonstrate leadership qualities, including initiative, problem-solving skills, and the ability to motivate and inspire others.
  • Camp environments can be unpredictable, so counselors should be flexible and adaptable to changes in schedules, activities, and camper needs.
  • A genuine interest in working with children and capable of participating in outdoor recreational activities and sports would be considered a key component of success in role.
  • Please note, if you are the successful candidate, you may be required to provide a criminal background check, vulnerable sector check and/or reference checks.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills with demonstrated ability to multi-task and prioritize.
  • Experience delivering programming, in a cross-cultural context would be considered an asset.
  • Demonstrates a high level of empathy, coupled with a strong working knowledge of the challenges and issues facing newcomer populations, networks and support organizations.
  • Demonstrates cultural competence and the ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds
  • An effective communicator in the English language, with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Able to deliver information in a format that is clear, concise, organized and appropriate for it's intended audience.
  • Strong networking & relationship-building skills would be considered an asset
  • Ability to communicate in other languages would be considered an asset
  • Role will involve some evening and/or overnight/weekend work (as particulars demand), as well as travel to different parts of the province as required.
