Position Overview


Reporting to the Principal of the Senior School, the Vice Principal of Student Life and Belonging will work closely with the Vice Principal of Student Success to ensure the implementation of the mission, vision, values and strategic teaching and learning priorities of the School. This individual will have a team of School Counselors reporting directly to them and will be facilitating the Student Life and Belonging team, which includes the Athletics Director, Coordinator of Outdoor Education, and the Coordinator of Community & Experiential Learning.

  • Demonstrated experience as a dynamic, innovative and enthusiastic educator
  • Experience in progressive discipline and creating systems that promote prosocial behaviour
  • Experience in using metrics to measure the success of and inform future action plans
  • Evidence of strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a team environment with demonstrated competence in communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and effectively with all stakeholders (students, parents/guardians, staff, faculty)
  • Experience with risk management and the implementation of provincial policies related to safe and caring schools


Job Responsibilities:


  • With oversight of the Senior School Principal, develops and implements a set of metrics to identify, measure, and monitor data & school improvement related to Student Life and belonging.
  • Promotes a culture of respect and high standards for social interaction through oversight, monitoring & addressing issues of lateness, attendance, uniform and code of conduct.
  • Serves as 1st point of the administrative contact for student, teacher, and family to address social, emotional, behavioral concerns (Level 1/2 of Multi-Tiered System of Supports)
  • Leads the crisis management drills in the Senior School (fire drills, lockdowns, earthquake drills) with the support of the VP of Student Success.
  • Leads and facilitates the Student Life and Belonging team with the leads of co-curricular programs, including Leadership and Community partnerships, Outdoor Education and Athletics to:
  • Ensure a school life program that cultivates the whole person and the documentation and scope and sequence of BC core competencies, YHS values and life skills across our co-curricular program.
  • Serve as the administrative contact and provide logistical support for school assemblies and student leadership
  • Ensure oversight and adequate supervision of co-curricular programs and student-led clubs/teams


  • Working with and supporting the Coordinator of Community & Experiential Learning, Coordinator of Outdoor Education and the Director of Athletics, is the point of contact for local and provincial co-curricular excursions.
  • Serves on the multidisciplinary team that addresses behavioral and digital threat assessments.
  • In partnership with the VP of Student Success and using a data-informed approach, creates, implements and reviews the school experience so that it promotes well-being, academic excellence and belonging.
  • Oversees the Teacher Advisory Group Program and collaborates with the VP of Student Success to create a meaningful Grade 8 Transitions program to promote belonging and well-being.
  • In collaboration with the Head of the Wellness Hub and VP of Student Success, develops, implements, and monitors a system of restorative practice, progressive discipline, and anti-bullying (Grades 8-12)
  • Co-teaches the CLE block (Grade 10) or other teaching duties as assigned with the VP of Student Success
  • Teaching duties as assigned


Operations: With oversight from the Senior school Principal


  • Ensures the smooth operations of the Senior school
  • Managing Student Life budgets
  • Plans and executes Senior School Staff meetings, Department Head Meetings and lead team meetings, along with the VP of Student Success
  • Recruits faculty & staff in collaboration with the Director of Human Resources, & VP Student Success
  • Develops and monitors the SS supervision schedule (lunch and morning recess supervision)
  • Assists with the recruitment of SS staff
  • Hires SS Teachers-on-call (TOC)
  • Conducts Teacher & Staff evaluations
  • Co-leads New Teacher Orientation & New Teacher Meetings with the VP Student Success and Junior School VP
  • Participates in the Admissions process: interviews, assessments, open houses
  • Contributes to communication with Senior School families
  • Develops & conducts program review of areas where strategically identified


Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Strong organizational, planning and time management skills
  • BC Teacher certification or equivalent
  • Bachelor of Education
  • A Master's in Education is preferred
  • Demonstrated track record of management and leadership
  • 2+ years of experience as an Educational Leader
  • 5+ years of teaching experience
  • Strong communication skills (written and oral)
  • Ability to multitask and work in a fast-paced environment
  • A high degree of diplomacy and confidentiality
  • Proficiency in using and integrating technology, including data management and analysis
  • Flexibility and sense of humour
