Nurse Career Navigator (Job ID: 4656)

Working within the Nursing Innovation & Development portfolio, the Nurse Career Navigator works as a connector, coach and resource to nurses (both domestic and Internationally Educated) and nursing learners at all stages of their career journey. This new and novel healthcare role will work collaboratively across human resources, nursing practice and education, and leadership and organizational development to help to cultivate more robust nursing pathways and retention strategies within Unity Health Toronto and to play a facilitative role by connecting individual nurses with the careers that they desire at Unity Health Toronto.

Responsibilities

The primary role of the Career Nurse Navigator is to proactively and intentionally recruit and retain nurses across the employee lifespan, from volunteers and learners, through to practicing nurses at UHT. The role will also partner with, and serve as a connection between, the Nursing Practice & Education and Human Resources teams to optimize workforce programming for target groups, including nursing students, Clinical Externs, Internationally Educated Nurses (IENs), and other newly-registered nurses.

Consultation/Collaboration

Maintaining accurate records of nurses' career development activities, progress, and achievements for reporting purposes and future reference.

  • Actively support and initiate recruitment activities (e.g., job fairs, career information sessions) to attract nursing students, Clinical Externs, IENs and newly-registered nurses to UHT
  • Advise and provide information to IENs on immigration and licensure pathways, including matching to appropriate programs (e.g., Supervised Practice Experience Partnership (SPEP) and Clinical Extern Programs) which exist at Unity Health Toronto as well as relevant job opportunities.
  • Work with completed SPEP candidates to ensure they are hired within Unity Health, especially where there are no suitable vacancies on the unit where SPEP was completed.
  • Coordinating with various departments (Education, Human Resources, Leadership & Organizational Development, Wellness) and educational institutions to create and facilitate access to training programs, workshops, certifications, and other resources that can enhance nurses' skills and qualifications.
  • Attend relevant team meetings of Human Resources, Nursing Practice, Education and Leadership and Organizational Development to promote and enhance awareness & utilization of ministry funded pipeline programs (NGG, SPEP, Temporary Licensure, Clinical Extern).

Education

Serve as a career navigator for nursing students, Clinical Externs, IENs and newly-registered nurses by providing information and guidance on specialty areas and programs of interest, as well as connecting them to areas of interest while considering high vacancy areas at UHTWork with Nursing Graduate Guarantee program participants and managers to ensure appropriate career matching, transition to FT employment and retention at UHTCoach hiring managers and human resource team members on strategic employment pathways for nursing students, clinical externs, IENs and newly-registered nurses (e.g., SPEP to NGG, CE to NGG, UCP to SPEP, PSW to RPN, RPN to RN) to ensure seamless transitions between rolesAdvise and coach current and prospective nurses (RNs and RPNs) about sponsorship and other career development streams within Unity Health (i.e. critical care, OR, etc.)Advise and coach current staff on various nursing awards and funding opportunities to achieve professional goals.Assisting nurses in preparing for promotions by offering guidance on the application process, interview preparation, and showcasing their skills and achievements.Encouraging nurses to participate in professional associations, conferences, and networking events to expand their professional connections and stay updated on industry trends.


Quality Improvement

Maintaining accurate records of nurses' career development activities, progress, and achievements for reporting purposes and future reference.Identification of opportunities to improve processes for nursing staff recruitment and retention plans/activities.Represents the organization and participates in the healthcare community through research, evaluation, conference abstract submissions and presentations.Participates in site and network activity as it relates to building a quality culture and capacity for improvement;Develops education plans related to Quality Improvement, as required for the Network and for local programs and teams.

Partnerships and Engagement

Partner with the Nursing Practice leaders, Education & Leadership and Organizational Development teams to foster connections, networking opportunities and outreach for IENs to support their transition to Canadian practice.Act as a liaison with educational partners to create innovative career development opportunities and partnerships at Unity Health Toronto.Engage as a leader, liaison and resource for CLMs/PCMs, Clinical Educators ¿ Nursing and other nursing leadership roles to build awareness of this new role in meeting nursing career navigation needs of their staff.

Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree in Nursing requiredCompletion of a Master's Degree in Nursing, Education, Health Administration or Leadership strongly preferredMust be currently registered by and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)Current BLS requiredCanadian Nurses Association and/or Registered Nurses Association of Ontario preferredMinimum of 5-7 years of experience in nursing or nursing education in a complex acute care setting preferred Previous educational experience Strong teaching and adult learning skills requiredAbility to plan, design, deliver and evaluate coaching, mentoring and teaching geared toward nursesDemonstrated evidence of strong knowledge on regulatory standards, organizational policies/guidelines and evidenceDemonstrated experience in working collaboratively with nurses and interprofessional teams to improve nurse satisfaction and retention Strong organizational and communication skills (writing, active listening, conflict resolution, ability to inspire others, delegation, mentoring, coaching, goal setting etc.)Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skillsDemonstrated commitment to the mission and values of Unity Health Toronto
