Position: Lead, Community Technical Liaison

Reporting to: Manager, Strategic Planning and Senior Manager, Operations

Location: Preferred Location: Interior (Kamloops or Trail) – or willingness to travel

Hours: 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday / some evenings & weekends)

Term: ASAP - December 31, 2024 (With the possibility of extension)

As a Community Technical Liaison , you are passionate about engaging communities and demonstrating leadership. With a knowledge of invasive species and a willingness to reach out and engage First Nations and local communities, you will aim to increase awareness, reporting, and action to steward lands and waters, through traditional practices. You will have a strong focus on the Kamloops and Trail area along with a key role in growing and supporting the Indigenous Invasive Species Network across the province.

With respectful and culturally responsive communication and engagement skills, you will communicate with First Nations and local communities to identify and deliver information and training aligned with local needs and interests.

During the initial year, you will be responsible for:

  1. Liaising and communicating with local First Nations and local communities.
  2. Identify and support local Advisors to help guide priorities for field operations and demonstration trials for mining sites in the Kamloops and Trail area.
  3. Developing and finalizing resources (reports and/or video) on invasive species impacting traditional cultural values and practices and First Foods.
  4. Coordinating communication, training, and outreach for local First Nations communities.

You will work directly with local communities and organizations to provide leadership on training and mentor individuals and/or teams on invasive species management, including invasive plants.

You will join a passionate team that provides educational resources and information to diverse audiences. This role has the potential to expand to include other community engagement programs including training, resources and information, and engagement in other sectors, such as forestry, agriculture, and utilities, in addition to mining.

  RESPONSIBILITIES  

  • Identify and directly engage with First Nations and local communities in the Kamloops and/or Trail area, and beyond
  • Facilitate input of local Advisors on invasive species priorities and operations in the Kamloops and/or Trail area
  • Identify, directly engage, support and mentor youth/young adults in their communities and/or online to build capacity and skills to become solutions leaders in their communities
  • Work collaboratively with a provincial team, including program staff and volunteers, to enhance the role of organizational partners

What skills and strengths you will bring as a Community Technical Liaison:

  • Excellent communication skills (written and verbal)- and ability to engage a wide range of people
  • Experience and proven ability to respectfully engage with First Nations
  • Ability to support and engage advisors. Ability to build meaningful relationships and engage advisors to guide project activities and implementation
  • Ability to recruit and support community partners

Other relevant skills you may have: 

  • Ability to prepare and effectively deliver community presentations to a wide range of audiences with diverse backgrounds, ages, and interests
  • Knowledge of invasive species and/or stewardship
  • Experience with using technology to facilitate engagement
  • Experience with event coordination
  • Able to work flexible hours (evenings/weekends)
  • Proven ability in delivering training programs to adults and/or youth
  • A positive and energetic attitude

Working Conditions:

This is ideally a full-time role but will be flexible to accommodate the right candidate(s), Preferably based in Kamloops/Merritt area but open to considering an alternate location with travel to these area(s).

  • For the right candidate(s), this could be split into a part-time role; directly linked to funding and skills
  • Travel will be required, primarily within the province of British Columbia
  • The successful candidate will be required to work some evenings and weekends as necessary

Salary and Benefits:

  • Salary range: $55-$70,000 (under review)- commensurate with experience and qualifications.
