The opportunity

Tata Steel Minerals Canada is currently seeking a Wastewater Treatment Technician to join the Essential Site Services  team.

For Fly-in/Fly-out  applicants, the position will be based on a 2-week ON/OFF rotation  basis to and from the Menihek region in Labrador, near the town of Schefferville, QC. Operations at our mine site are running 24/7 all year long. Standard work schedules for FIFO positions are 12 hours per day . The main pick-up points are St. John’s, Gander, Deer Lake, Happy Valley-Goose Bay in NL, Halifax, NS, Moncton, NB, and Montreal, QC.

*For local candidates based in the Schefferville, QC region, the position will have a Monday to Friday, 8 hours per day, 40 hour per work week schedule. 

TSMC operates a regulatorily-complex site which spans 2 provinces, located in a northern remote setting, approximately 20 km from the community of Schefferville, Quebec. The site’s operations span over 30 km in length and include active operations of several pits at the same time along with an ore processing complex. The Essential Site Services team is responsible for providing and ensuring continuity to all basic site services such as drinking water treatment and distribution, sewage treatment, carpentry, electrical and mechanical support. 

Reporting to the site Head – Processing, Maintenance and Essential Site Services, the position will be directly responsible for the operations, maintenance, troubleshooting, coordination of any necessary repairs and reporting required for the site wastewater treatment plant. The ideal candidate must have some formal education, training and/or experience in wastewater treatment operations. For any FIFO candidate, a willingness to take on additional general duties and responsibilities will also be required.

*Please note these are temporary positions, from May to July 2024, with the possibility of extension thereafter.

Major Responsibilities

  • Operate and monitor computerized control systems and related equipment in water treatment plant (pumps, blowers, analyzers, etc.) to ensure continuous operation of the system.
  • Perform filtration membrane maintenance as required.
  • Maintain chemicals stocks required for operation (Sodium hypochlorite, Sodium Bicarbonate and Flocculants) and manage timely ordering of future stocks.
  • Manage septage and sludge collection systems; adjust the amount of sludge wasting to maintain required nutrient / microorganism ratio.
  • Monitor and inspect plant equipment and systems to detect equipment malfunctions and to ensure plant systems are operating normally.
  • Perform minor maintenance or assist skilled tradespersons with installation and repair of plant machinery.
  • Collect water samples for chemical and bacterial analyses, analyze test results and instrument readings and make adjustments to plant equipment and systems to ensure effluent complies with applicable regulations (Schedule A of Newfoundland Environmental Control Water and Sewage Regulations, 2003)
  • Complete and maintain plant logs and reports.

Required Experience

  • Previous water treatment, process or industrial experience preferred.
  • Valid class 5 driver’s license is required.
  • Troubleshooting and detailed ability to provide accurate descriptions of problems.
  • Mechanical aptitude is an asset.
  • Understanding of time management.
  • Able to lift, pull, stand, or crouch for long periods of time (physically fit).
  • Capable of the safe handling of chemicals.
  • Able to adapt to change.
  • Ability to lift 25 kg.
  • Medium proficiency with computer software, i.e. Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, etc.)

  • Ability to work with little supervision and function in a multidiscipline environment.
  • Proven understanding of safe work practices and mitigating risk.
  • Willingness to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Willingness to work in a remote northern community.

  • Bilingual (English and French) would be an asset.
