Educational Events Assistant

British Columbia, Canada Alliance for Arts and Culture Full time

The Educational Events Assistant will work with The Polygon’s programming team to prepare and deliver outreach programs during the Gallery’s vibrant summer season.

A primary focus will be the Kids First program—taking place on select weekend days each month, and featuring family-friendly activities based on current exhibitions—under the supervision and mentorship of the Gallery’s Curatorial Administrator. The summer Assistant will work closely alongside the Public Programs Assistant and Artistic Lead to deliver this bustling program and guide a team of Art Helpers and volunteers.

Additionally, the successful candidate will support the Meet Me at the Gallery program to engage seniors with once-monthly art and social activities, under the supervision of the Gallery’s Indigenous Liaison and Outreach Coordinator who leads this program. The Educational Events Assistant may also support the delivery of select outreach programs for adult audiences; including film screenings, live performances, and public talks.

Responsibilities:

Educational Events Assistant will provide support to the following tasks:

· Collaboratively develop ideas for art activities that relate to the themes and imagery of the Gallery’s current exhibitions.

· Source and assemble bulk art materials for Kids First and Meet Me at the Gallery activities in a resourceful and environmentally-sound manner; purchase new materials when necessary.

· Co-lead Art Helper team in greeting, distributing materials, and teaching Kids First activities.

· Assemble and distribute weekly art kits for Kids First, including coordinating with Guest Services.

· Create, implement, and set-up floor plans for both inside and outside the Gallery.

· Track and organize attendance metrics, public programs’ inventory, and archived instructions.

· Operate Lightspeed and other point-of-sales systems to process donations alongside Guest Services.

· Greet Meet Me at the Gallery participants and help with wayfinding; assist seniors in completing tours and art activities.

· Contribute ideas and initiate new contacts for enhancing the Gallery’s outreach, the goal being to improve discoverability among underrepresented audiences.

· Occasionally assist the Gallery’s Event Liaisons with set-up during adult public programs, helping to ensure production schedules are followed and assisting vendors with questions.

· Occasionally assist with visitor wayfinding during adult public programs.

Qualifications:

The successful candidate will be highly adaptable and service-oriented. They/he/she will possess excellent organizational, problem-solving, and collaborative skills to complement their familiarity with contemporary art and art materials. (While this candidate need not hold a degree, preference may be given to candidates who have completed, or are in the process of completing, a diploma or degree program from a university or college in studio art, arts education, art history, film, cultural studies, curatorial studies, education, or equivalent experience.)

This role requires long periods of standing, working outdoors, and the ability to lift 50lbs. The summer Assistant will also need to pass a vulnerable sector Criminal Record Check. Valid driver’s licence and/or CPR certification is an asset.

We encourage applications from candidates with a broad range of backgrounds, including age, race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, class, and ability.

Finally, candidates must meet the following funding requirements of Canada Summer Jobs:

· Must be between 19 and 30 years of age at the start of the employment;

· Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person to whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act, for the duration of the employment;

· Have a valid Social Insurance Number at the start of employment and be legally entitled to work in Canada in accordance with relevant provincial or territorial legislation and regulations.

Estimated Start Date: Tuesday, May 28, 2024
Duration: 15 weeks Hourly Wage: $22.50
Hours: 32 hours/week on average, including most Saturdays, with adjustable hours and days throughout the week, upon request.
The Polygon provides sufficient flexibility in work arrangements to ensure that candidates can accomplish their work while maintaining healthy lives with personal and family obligations and passions outside of their careers.

How to Apply:

Applications will be accepted until Monday, May 13, 2024 at 5pm. Only successful applicants will be contacted for an interview, so please be prepared to promptly provide references.

To apply, email a resume and cover letter with subject line “Educational Events Assistant” to Jana Ghimire, Curatorial Administrator at j.ghimire@thepolygon.ca
