Job Purpose

The Microelectronics/Optical Process Engineer, as part of the larger product solutions development team, provides process engineering solutions in support of product development, NPI, and manufacturing of a variety of different optical and microelectronic product families.

We are looking for an experienced Optical Active and Passive Alignment Process engineer, to work within a worldwide end-to-end product development team, to successfully develop and implement in manufacturing advanced Opto/microelectronic components, modules and sub-systems.

Nature of Duties / Responsibilities

Work directly with optical and microelectronic product design and development team to provide process engineering solutions in support of new product development, with subsequent NPI and manufacturing support.

Supports new technology research and development pertaining to optical and microelectronic process solutions.

Manages projects and timelines in order to meet milestones and deliverables of various customer projects.

  1. Develops active alignment recipes on automated optical alignment systems for free space optics, grating coupling, edge coupling, fiber arrays, etc.
  2. Develops epoxy dispensing, semiconductor die and microelectronic components bonding and interconnection (wirebond for example), flip chip assembly, under fill, packaging encapsulation, etc.
  3. Troubleshoots and analyzes process performance problems.
  4. Provides technical guidance to less experienced team members.
  5. Conducts research into complex engineering problems to develop new operating policies, capabilities, and processes.
  6. Assists the Process Engineering team to deliver on accountabilities.
  7. Takes ownership for processes under his/her control.
  8. Helps to create Process Assembly documentation.
  9. Tooling and fixture design and procurement.
  10. Performs qualification on new processes being introduced.
  11. Implements and suggests engineering changes.
  12. Researches, procures, and accepts new pieces of equipment for continuously evolving technologies.
  13. Supports customer NPI builds within tight timelines.
  14. Provides DFx type feedback to the internal design team as well as external customers to help optimize manufacturability of products as well as increase yields and throughput.

Education & Experience

Requires a University degree in Engineering. 8+ years' experience in a Process or Manufacturing Engineering support role.

Experience with active alignment of free space optics. Experience with equipment programming (auto dispensers, pick and place machines, welders, etc.).

A background in the execution of "best practice" process control is required. Understanding of operating methodologies in an electronics assembly environment.

Experience with implementing Engineering changes. Experience with organizing and structuring file folders and naming conventions for reference.

Experience with Labview or other motion control software programming would be an asset.

Hands-on build experience would be an asset (handling bare dies or miniature components with tweezers, use of microscopes, camera systems, etc.)

Experience with laser welding would be an asset. Experience establishing active alignment requirements and setup of eng bench type systems would be an asset.

Experience with AutoCAD/SolidWorks would be an asset. Experience with lean manufacturing principles.

Experience with DFM and FMEA would be an asset. Experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
