An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Senior Fire Engineer/Code Specialist to join our North America Fire-Life Safety Practice. Based in Toronto, Canada, you will join a diverse team of fire-life safety specialists and engineers involved in the delivery of a wide range of infrastructure projects throughout North America and beyond. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and growing a team of code specialists, and for expanding Fire Life Safety capabilities in building and fire code review, code compliance and accessibility compliance assessments, and development of the fire-life safety strategies for diverse projects. They will work closely with our mechanical, fire-protection, and electrical engineers, and other design professionals in their design and implementation.
As a Senior Fire Engineer/Code Specialist working as an integral part of the infrastructure advisory group, your duties will include, but are not limited to:
Fire engineering/Fire Strategy with a focus on Building Code and Fire Code consulting, fire protection and egress strategies, including standpipe/sprinkler design, fire alarm design, and performance-based fire engineering design on local, national, and international projects.
Review code and accessibility compliance for architectural and fire protection/fire alarm and other system drawings, and design documents for new construction or modification of existing facilities.
Develop fire life safety strategies, and support performance-based designs that are a departure from the prescriptive code requirements.
Develop and implement fire prevention programs and procedures to eliminate personnel injury and minimize property damage due to fire.
Perform facility and life-safety evaluations to determine fire risk, and provide effective strategies, programs including alternate solutions to mitigate risk and seek compliance with current fire and life safety requirements.
Perform and review building codes and fire code requirements for determining acceptable water supply designed to meet fire suppression demands.
Develop emergency services baseline needs assessment to document the minimum services needed to support life safety and property protection.
Coordinate and conduct building and fire code reviews and prepare project-related technical reports.
Effectively communicate with project team members, clients, AHJs and other third-party stakeholders.
Satisfy client needs and expectations by completing assigned tasks on schedule and within budget.
Business development, proposal preparation, and team building.
Candidate Specification
The ideal candidate will have experience working within our primary markets along with the following preferred qualifications:
Bachelor’s Degree or higher in Engineering (preferably Fire Protection), Architecture, or related field.
15+ years of experience in code consulting, design of fire suppression and alarm systems, and developing performance based FLS strategies in a project design environment is required.
Registered Professional Engineer/ (NFPA) Certified Fire Protection Specialist plus a combination of relevant education and experience, or equivalent professional designation preferred.
Experience in developing building code concepts and equivalencies, conducting building plan reviews, and conducting field inspections, and audits.
Understanding of applicable federal laws, regulations, building/fire codes.
Understanding of intent and the independent and interdependent relationship between applicable building codes, fire codes, and national consensus codes and standards.
Experience using and interpreting local codes and standards including as CSA, ICC, FM, UL/ULC, CEN, NFPA, applicable to a diverse set of operations that include hazardous, industrial, business, assembly, and storage occupancies.
Experienced and comfortable interacting with jurisdictional authorities to present and defend proposed code approach.
A demonstrated ability to work independently, and to own initiative, in the development of successful code strategies and approaches.
