What you will do

You will work at an international airport, CBSA international mail processing centre, marine operation or telephone reporting centre.

As an SBSO, you will work alongside BSOs to facilitate the flow of legitimate travellers and goods, and identify those that are a potential risk to Canada.

You will also promote compliance with Canada's border, trade and tax laws through responsible enforcement, quality service and public education.

Job duties include but are not limited to:

• Serving and educating the public with professionalism, respect, empathy, and integrity
• Interviewing travellers
• Verifying declarations and goods
• Referring travellers and goods that require further examination
• Identifying fraudulent documents

Note: SBSOs do not carry a duty firearm.

When will you work?

If hired, your summer contract period will range from end of April 2024 to early September 2024. Your work period may vary by location. You will work full-time with the possibility of part-time re-hire for Fall 2024 and Winter 2025.

Conditions of employment

As part of the hiring process, you must pass the online Officer Trainee Entrance Exam (OTEE) and interview, after which, you must meet the following conditions before you are hired and while you are employed:

1. You must be at least the age of majority in the province where you will be working.

The age of majority is 18.

British Columbia, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia
The age of majority is 19.

2. Depending on the work location, you may need a valid driver's license* that allows you to drive a motor vehicle in Canada.

* A valid driver’s licence is a full driver’s licence. This does NOT include a driver’s licence with restrictions as part of any provincial graduated licencing. You will be asked to present an original, unrestricted driver’s licence.

3. If you are considered for a job, you must meet the following requirements (CBSA will coordinate the administrative procedures):

• Complete and meet the standards of a Health Canada medical exam, where required.
• Obtain and maintain a Secret security clearance.
• Obtain and maintain, in the weeks after being hired, a Restricted Area Identity Card (where required).
• Successfully complete the paid, mandatory 5 week SBSO training which takes place between end of April and July.
• SBSO training includes the Control and Defensive Tactics (CDT) course required to carry, use, and maintain CBSA issued defensive equipment (except a duty firearm), where required.
• What is CDT Training? The training gives officers the necessary skills to protect themselves and the public, and if necessary, use force to perform detentions and arrests while on duty. You will be required to learn and demonstrate physical skills such as handcuffing, takedowns, ground fighting, strikes ( punches, kicks), and defensive batons techniques

4. Wear and maintain a uniform, as per the CBSA Uniform Policy and Standard of Appearance.

5. Carry, use and maintain CBSA-issued defensive equipment (handcuffs, oleoresin capsicum spray, baton), in accordance with the CBSA's policies and directives.

6. Work full-time hours and various shifts, including weekends and holidays.

7. Work overtime as required.

8. Operate a government vehicle where required.
