Manager, Occupational Health & Safety (#24-022) PROGRAM: Occupational Health & Safety
The Garry Hurvitz Centre for Community Mental Health at SickKids (CCMH at SickKids) is a child and youth mental health centre integrated with The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) . CCMH at SickKids is undertaking an ambitious agenda to establish a revitalized academic community mental health centre that provides the highest quality of care, combined with excellence in teaching and community-based research. CCMH at SickKids is located across two sites in Toronto and offers both in-person and virtual care to clients and their families, from prevention and early intervention through assessment, counselling and therapy and intensive services. We are also connected to the continuum of mental health services for children and youth supported by SickKids: the Brain and Mental Health Program, the SickKids TeleLink Mental Health Program , the SickKids CCMH Learning Institute and our online resources through AboutKidsHealth . We are currently seeking applicants for the full-time regular position of an Occupational Health & Safety Manager. The successful candidate will serve as the subject matter expert to provide leadership, guidance and expertise on occupational health, safety and hygiene programs and services to achieve and maintain compliance with the extensive framework of occupational health, safety & environmental legislation, and to promote a healthy and safe work environment for all staff, students, volunteers, visitors, and patients.
Develops, recommends, communicates and implements occupational health and safety programs, audits, reporting and evaluates programs making revisions, as necessary
Identifies existing or emerging workplace hazards, evaluates potential risks, assesses the need for interventions and determines measures to mitigate, reduce or control risks
Provides occupational risk management services and programs to staff and access equipment/services in accordance with a service agreement
Identifies and recommends control measures that protect staff, meet legal requirements and are within the financial restraints of the organization
Ensures compliance with legislation incorporating best practices into policies and procedures
Provides advice and develops/oversees OHS training and education programs such as and not limited to code training and emergency planning
Develops and oversees safety reporting policies, procedures and systems ensuring appropriate notifications of staff-related incidents, illnesses and injuries
Develops accident investigation procedures training staff, conducting inspections, tracking and analyzing incident trends and identifying/implementing action plans to prevent/eliminate incidents
Develops and/or provides consultation on emergency preparedness and response for site locations
Provides consultation and advice on hazardous waste management and assists with developing/maintaining programs/procedures to collect, sort, store and manage hazardous waste
Provides advice during the planning and design for construction and renovation projects, as well as the purchase of equipment
Manages relationships with staff to develop innovative and evidence-based solutions and advance occupational health and safety best practices
Develops and implements communication and education strategies related to occupational hygiene and safety programs, policies and procedures
Maintains the occupational health and safety program and management system ensuring adherence to legislative requirements and external guidelines
Facilitates the Joint Health and Safety Committee and represents the organization on occupational health and safety issues, as needed
Maintains up-to-date knowledge of occupational health and safety trends, best practices and legislation within the industry
Makes decisions on policies, procedures and best practices ensuring occupational health and safety programs meet the needs of the organization, as well as adhere to legislation
Infection Prevention and Control
Plans, develops, communicates, and implements an infection prevention and control program based on risk assessment, organizational priorities, and evidence based best practices
Plans, develops, and implements communication, training, and education strategies for key infection prevention and control (immunizations, hand hygiene, food safety, respiratory etiquette)
Provides consultation and advice on equipment and materials used for infection prevention and control across all sites
Disability Management
Provides First Aid Training to all staff for certification compliance
Complies with the organization’s vision, policies and procedures
Performs other tasks as assigned by management
Concentration and creativity required daily to facilitate meetings, analyze data, interpret legislation, use tools, listen, format documents, create materials, present training, etc.
In-depth knowledge of the OHS Act, WHMIS and Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act applicable to Ontario including a thorough knowledge of occupational hygiene and safety theory, principles and best practices
Knowledge of adult training development and delivery
Ability to problem solve and use analytical and conceptual thinking skills to analyse root causes and support corrective actions to prevent incidents and injuries

Strong time management and organizational skills
Ability to incorporate values of a culturally competent practice of diversity and inclusiveness in all aspects of work
Knowledge of MS Office Suites (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint), as well as ability to use office equipment efficiently (telephone, photocopier, and fax)
Ability to use tools and equipment necessary to perform the duties of the job (i.e. measuring tape, monitoring equipment, etc.)
Ability to travel between sites
