Microbiologist

Apex Systems is searching for a Microbiologist for our client in Mississauga, ON. Our client is in the Medical Device industry and is looking for someone with a background in microbiology, and experience BSL-2 lab environments, cell culture, and exposure to design validation. This position is a full-time permanent position.

This Microbiologist role will involve participating in the development of innovative, customer-oriented medical products utilizing a project management approach from proof-of-concept to the technology transfer stage with a special emphasis on leveraging microbiological knowledge to facilitate the commercialization of antimicrobial-related projects in the new product pipeline.

The responsibilities of the Microbiologist include overseeing and maintaining the organization’s compliance and safe operation of a microbiology laboratory and associated culture stocks (Biohazard Safety Level 2) and performing or training of staff, as necessary, in antimicrobial efficacy or endotoxin testing.

Specifically, this role requires in-depth knowledge of culturing and sub-culturing various pathogens including various Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, yeast, fungi, and molds.

Responsibilities:

  • Functions as a Project Leader and provides technical advisory support services for both internal and OEM-related projects
  • Conducts product development planning from feasibility study to design validation stage using project management concepts such as risk management, effective intra-team communication, and project deliverables
  • Executes or delegates research and development activities in microbiology laboratory
  • Evaluates biological or antimicrobial activity of medical devices/new products against bacteria, yeast, fungi, or mold using either newly developed or established microbiological protocols
  • Oversees antimicrobial data analysis, presents findings, and provides context or direction to Project Leaders or senior team members following experimentation and testing
  • Ensures organization’s compliance to biosafety level 2 guidelines
  • Works effectively in collaboration with other members of the department, or with stakeholders across the organization with whom tasks must be completed
  • Reports any deviations from the target completion date or allotted resources of assigned tasks to Project Leaders or to immediate manager
  • Completes these assigned tasks within the standards required
  • Participates and complies with the Quality Management System (ISO 13485)
  • Supervises lab- and project-related tasks by lab technicians and junior members
  • Assists in the training of junior staff members
  • Provides input into annual performance appraisals of staff
  • Keeps abreast of current scientific literature and emerging methodologies and technologies
  • Performs or assists in other duties as assigned by immediate manager

Key Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of industrial experience in a relevant field
  • Minimum of 3 years of industry experience in research and development of medical devices/pharmaceutics or 3+ years of postgraduate experience.
  • Experience with the preparation of quality system documents (e.g. SOPs, protocols) and regulatory dossiers for medical devices and/or combination products (devices/biologics or devices/drugs)
  • Possess an understanding of the core processes of medical devices/pharmaceutical development including familiarity with project management concepts such as risk management, effective intra-team communication, and project deliverables
  • Exceptional organizational abilities with task prioritization, multi-tasking, use of timelines and time management techniques
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills (written and verbal)
  • Exhibit strong leadership skills
  • Proficient in Microsoft 365 and Microsoft Teams, and be able to easily navigate through the internet to obtain technical information
  • Analytical mindset and excellent problem-solving skill
  • Positive attitude, self-motivated and detail-oriented
  • Collaborative, open-minded, and forth-coming
  • Ability to work independently as well as participating in a team of professionals
