The Sage Grouse Conservation Technician will assist with the Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo’s Greater Sage Grouse Project that is working to maximize species recovery and reduce the risk of extinction.
Contract Term:
~ May 13, 2024 to September 27, 2024with possibility of extension (dates flexible)

What You Will Do:
Assist with growing native plants to feed Sage-Grouse. Duties may include planting, weeding and harvesting plants.
Assist with observations of captive Sage-Grouse.
Assist with development and writing of project proposals and/or program plans.
Assist with data management.
Complying with the zoo’s health and safety program.
Other duties as assigned may include insect collection and/or husbandry, literature reviews, data analysis or equipment management.
What You Will Bring:
Possess or working towards a BSc or equivalent education.
Experience with data entry and data management.
Experience in native plant propagation or insect husbandry an asset.
Experience of working in adaptive management frameworks (e.g Conservation Standards) an asset.
Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
Ability to follow detailed protocols, and accurately and precisely record and collect data.
Excellent interpersonal skills.
Ability to take direction and complete work and solve problems with minimal supervision.
Demonstrate a passion for wildlife conservation.
A commitment to adhere to safety protocols and contribute to safe operating practices.
Additional Requirements:
~ All candidates must be authorized to work in Canada

Working Conditions:
Working independently or in a team.
Work is on site at Calgary Zoo. Hybrid option for office duties.
Work schedules normally consist of working Monday-Friday, 8 hours/day.
The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo is an outdoor facility and all staff working at the zoo must be comfortable working in a large variety of outdoor conditions. The Wilder Institute/Calgary Zoo follows the advice of Environment Canada when responding to temperature and air quality issues.
