Director, Government Relations and Advocacy (Western Canada)

Position Overview:

Santis Health, a leading public affairs, communications and strategy consultancy focusing on the health care sector, is looking to hire a Director, Government Relations and Advocacy as part of our Western Canada based team. Based in British Columbia, this ambitious, self-motivated individual will work closely with the Santis team locally and nationally to provide strategic problem solving, public policy and communications services to clients and the senior leadership of the firm, and will also contribute to a positive, creative and performance-oriented culture within the company.

Applicants should have a sound knowledge of government relations, public affairs, stakeholder engagement and project management, as well as the most pressing health care and life sciences issues of the day. Previous experience working in health care, in government or as a consultant would be an advantage. 

While direct lobbying is an element of this role, candidates with lobby restrictions and/or cooling-off periods will be considered based on their background and experience.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Working closely with Santis team members to manage a wide range of client projects and deliverables
  • Advising on government engagement, public affairs, and advocacy strategies
  • Interacting with government officials and decision-makers to build and maintain relationships
  • Tracking emerging and evolving public policy issues – and analyzing their implications to client organizations
  • Liaising with clients as part of ongoing project management responsibilities
  • Identifying key stakeholders and creating tailored stakeholder maps
  • Participating in client strategy sessions
  • Developing government relations initiatives, a wide range of briefing notes, slide decks and other communication materials
  • Developing project management plans and keeping the project team focused on meeting multiple, tight timelines
  • Building rapport and credibility with clients, based on trust and expert counsel
  • Leading account teams in all functional areas as dictated by current client needs
  • Maintaining and growing relationships, recognizing and capitalizing on emerging opportunities, to help clients succeed
  • Playing a leadership role in coaching and facilitating professional development of staff
  • Building new business from existing and new clients in with mutually agreed-upon objectives
  • Proactively identify, respond to and lead new business opportunities
  • Undertaking direct, registerable lobbying (if possible)
  • Exemplify and actively foster a culture of teamwork and collaboration

Qualifications:

  • In-depth knowledge and network within the public sector, including the British Columbia provincial and municipal governments, provincial agencies and organizations
  • Degree in political science, public policy, economics, communications or a related field (or equivalent experience); post-graduate qualifications are beneficial
  • Minimum 5 years of public policy and regulatory experience related to government relations and advocacy in British Columbia
  • A solid mix of project management, policy analysis and communications experience
  • Strong understanding of and experience with government relations and public affairs in the pharmaceutical and healthcare industries
  • A self-starter who can work independently to create opportunities and solve problems
  • Strong leadership and team development skills; including ability to inform, delegate, empower and motivate
  • Deep understanding of working with Government and well-connected with government key influencers
  • A proven track record in client service excellence and relationship building and/or deep sectoral knowledge and specialized expertise
  • Ability to manage multiple accounts and priorities
  • Able to work at both a leadership and tactical level
  • Consulting experience would be a strong asset

Required Skills:

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills (including creating PowerPoint decks)
  • Excellent presentation skills, including the ability to communicate and advocate ideas to clients
  • Outstanding organizational skills, including the ability to juggle multiple clients, projects and competing deadlines on a regular basis
  • Skilled in priority-setting, efficient time-management and the ability to work independently
  • Ability to drive client files forward independently while identifying and providing guidance on the support needed
  • Detail-oriented
  • Problem solving ability
  • High level of professionalism
  • Bilingualism (French / English) would be an asset
