For the past four decades, we have led the industry by evolving our offerings to meet the needs of our public sector clients. Across Canada, Watson has worked closely with over 344 municipalities, utilities and school boards to grow and sustain better economies and communities. We work to protect the economic assets and interests of every client we serve. Our ability to collect, distill and interpret the right data allows us to develop key insights and strategic solutions that make a difference.
Our cross-functional team of municipal economists, urban planners, and accountants is responsive, collaborative, and innovative, and we are dedicated to producing the highest quality results for our clients. Recognized as a leading authority on the fiscal policy and land economics matters of the municipal government and school board sector, Watson is known for achieving results that translate into successful client outcomes.
We have earned our reputation for quality of analysis, as well as pragmatic and insightful interpretation of the issues we address. We are looking for a Planning Technician to support school board accommodation planning through data analysis, mapping and development tracking. You will review official plans, zoning by-laws and municipal planning applications to assess their impact on school accommodations and help identify solutions.
This is a full-time position operating within a hybrid work environment.
You want to gain experience in land use planning, development approvals and policy implementation. This is an opportunity to work directly with school boards and municipalities, assessing development proposals and their impact on school accommodations.
Your analysis and insights will influence planning processes, improving efficiency and guiding school board decisions on future infrastructure.
Whether your goal is municipal planning, finance or policy, we will provide the support and resources to help you advance.
As our new Planning Technician, you will:
Analyze data. Gather and assess demographic, economic, and land-use data to support school facility planning and forecasting.
Use Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software to create and update maps illustrating school boundaries, enrolment patterns, and land-use impacts.
Draft comment letters, presentations, and technical reports for school boards and municipal stakeholders.
Maintain databases. Track school facilities, enrolment projections, and development applications to inform decision-making.
Review planning applications. Assess official plans, zoning by-laws, subdivision plans, and development proposals to evaluate their impact on school accommodations.
Support planning processes. Assist in preparing schedules, tracking budgets, and identifying risks and mitigation strategies.
A degree in Urban Planning, Geography, or a related field, with academic, internship, or work experience in municipal planning and data management. You have a strong understanding of Ontario's geographic landscape, municipal development approvals, and key legislation such as the Planning Act and the Education Act.
Technical skills. Experience with Geographic Information Systems (GIS) software is an asset.
You approach problems with an engineering mindset, using logic, knowledge, and quantitative analysis skills. You have experience analyzing complex planning documents and data to assess impacts and provide recommendations.
You have experience drafting technical reports and comment letters, translating data and planning insights into concise, actionable recommendations. You build trust and maintain strong working relationships with stakeholders at all levels, including school boards, municipal officials, and the public.
You excel in a self-driven work environment, managing multiple projects with competing deadlines. You are detail-oriented, ensuring accuracy and quality in all aspects of your work.
At Watson, we are more than a professional services consulting firm—we are a community of experts dedicated to making a meaningful impact in municipal government and education. We ensure sustainability and shared success by focusing on building expertise across our organization.
From annual business plan discussions to transparent performance reviews, we prioritize knowledge sharing and professional growth. A virtual interview with a Talent Advisor will discuss your interest in the role and background.
An interview with a Senior Consultant. An interview with the Managing Partner and Senior Project Coordinator to learn more about the work we do and our culture.
Watson is firmly committed to diversity within its community and welcomes applications from racialized persons/persons of colour, Indigenous People of North America and the world, veterans, persons with disabilities, 2SLGBTQIA+ persons, and those who may contribute to the further diversification of ideas.
We are committed to providing accessible employment practices that comply with the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act ('AODA'). If you require accommodations at any stage of the interview process, please email us at careers@watsonecon.
