Overview of the Senior Underwriter / Team Lead :
The Senior Underwriter / Team Lead will be accountable for overseeing the day-to-day activities and performance management of a team of underwriters. This includes providing advice and expertise related A.M Fredericks property programs.
Please note; this role is 100% onsite in Ajax, Ontario (201-339 Westney Road South) with the potential for remote work (1-2 days / week) once onboarded.
Responsibilities of the Senior Underwriter / Team Lead :
Be responsible for underwriting tasks to achieve targeted goals within the product portfolio
Lead team performance through proactive coaching, employee development and performance appraisals
Review risk submissions within assigned authority limits – primarily, but not exclusively, through file and call audits. Evaluate, accept, reject or modify risks within established underwriting guidelines
Secure additional information and review endorsements where necessary and analyze all pertinent data to determine acceptability of risks according to established underwriting standards
Assist in preparing submissions for higher underwriting review
Coach brokers for success and improvement to enhance underwriting capabilities, provide market and underwriting insight
Maintaining the profitability of your portfolio through superior risk analysis, determining the quality of risk and making necessary recommendations on new business and renewals
Negotiating coverage, policy terms and premium rates with clients, referring business exceeding authority level to the appropriate level
Contacting external resources as required for additional information pertaining to the risk
Participating actively with brokers in terms of promoting products, developing and maintaining positive relationships and business development
Ensuring proper file documentation and organization within the underwriting system
Uplifting technical knowledge of yourself and the team through mentoring, coaching, training and meetings with colleagues and direct reports
Mentor / train junior underwriter(s) and technical assistant(s)
What we’re looking for in our Senior Underwriter / Team Lead :
The ideal candidate will be a highly self-motivated individual and collaborator who is client focused, proactive in dealing with situations and uses critical judgment to make decisions and offer solutions. The person will also demonstrate the following:
~ Post-Secondary degree or diploma in a related field, such as mathematics, finance, economics, business or equivalent experience
~10+ years of experience in underwriting
~ CIP Certification or equivalent
~ Team management / supervision / mentorship experience
~ Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
~ Proven mathematical and analytical skills
~ Considerable experience in a highly service-oriented role
~ Effective problem solver with initiative to be innovative and creative with developing new ideas and concepts
~ Exemplary interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to develop and maintain relationships
~ Excellent time management skills with proven ability to prioritize, handle multiple tasks and move between projects continuously
~ Excellent written and oral communication skills and presentation skills
~ Strong organizational skills, attention to detail
~ Committed to team-based environments
~ Proven ability to handle confidential material with the highest level of discretion
~ Demonstrated ability to flourish in environments of significant change
~ Autonomous (comfortable working with minimal supervision)
