Senior Mechanical Engineer

As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on our Engineering Services team, you will provide tank integrity engineering, planning and coordination services in support of Irving Oil’s Tank Life Extension (TLE) Program. In this role, you will be supporting Canada’s largest oil refinery in Saint John, NB as well as Irving Oil’s network of terminal facilities throughout Atlantic Canada and the US eastern seaboard. You will regularly visit the Saint John Refinery to review field conditions associated with your design activities, and you may be asked to travel occasionally to other locations in support of your work. You will rely on your experience and judgement to independently plan and accomplish goals while providing mentorship and guidance to less experienced team members.

Your Responsibilities:
  1. Provide Lead Engineering input to the development of a Tank Prioritization Tool based on the principles of API RP 580, risk-based inspection, with PoF (Potential of Failure) and CoF (Cost of Failure) factors derived from API STD 653 “Tank Inspection, Repair, Alteration and Reconstruction”.
  2. Provide Engineering input to the integrity risk assessment by tank, and provide recommendation of tank inspection priorities.
  3. Develop and maintain Irving Oil standard tank details and drawings.
  4. Provide input in the development of Program Process documents and procedures related to Engineering.
  5. Creation and review of EWO and work packages provided by Contractors for the execution of repairs and maintenance.
  6. Consolidate historical inspection and repair data, and update for future work.
  7. Maintain API compliance Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) for monthly reporting.
  8. Work with Asset Integrity Management team to maintain history data for all tanks.
  9. Manage OTR (On-The-Run) inspection support for budgeting and predictive scope.
  10. Provide repair recommendations for SOW (Scopes of Work) and budgets during the planning process.
  11. Assist in Managing the Tank Inspection Contractor during execution which includes scheduling and on-site visits while the Tank Repair Contractor is on site performing repair, alteration and reconstruction.
  12. Provide answers to API 650/653 questions for the TLE Program.
  13. Support planners on inspection progress daily during inspection window.
  14. Ensure contractor compliance with the Irving Oil tank related specifications.
  15. Review and approve 3rd party documents and drawings while assuring compliance with Codes and project requirements.
  16. Assist in scoping, assigning budgets, resource planning and setting schedules for the project's mechanical scope.
  17. Accountable for developing quality engineering deliverables within committed scope, schedule and budget.
  18. Supervise and inspect installation modification, and provide construction support and commissioning of engineering systems at construction sites.
  19. Participate fully in Look-ahead and Core Team meetings.

Your Experience:

Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (B.Sc. or B.Eng.) with P. Eng. eligibility in the Province of New Brunswick.
Minimum 5 years of tank integrity engineering experience in a refinery / petrochemical / oil and gas industry setting.
A working knowledge of procedures and best industry practices for tank repairs such as tank cleaning, inspection, welding, material selection and application, or be capable of quickly learning procedures as identified in API standards and practices relating to aboveground storage tanks and pressure vessels (bullets and spheres).
API Certification for API 510, 653 would be an asset.
API Certification for API 571, 577, or 580, or RBI (Risk-Based Inspection) background with metallurgy and corrosion training would also be a great benefit.
