The Archaeologist Field Lead / Indigenous Engagement Specialist will primarily be responsible for conducting desktop-based reviews for historical resource potential, archaeological field assessments, and monitoring in support of energy development projects in compliance with federal, provincial, and local regulations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Archaeologist Field Lead / Indigenous Engagement Specialist
  • Complete desktop-based reviews for archaeological records, known historical resources and areas with archaeological potential.
  • Provide advice on regulatory requirements for obtaining approval under the Ontario Heritage Act.
  • Develop workplans and complete Stage 1-4 archaeological field assessments and reporting.
  • Assist in the development of proposals for Stage 1-4 Archaeological Assessments
  • Support permitting efforts related to obtaining approval under the Ontario Hertiage Act, as required.
  • Provide archaeological field monitoring during construction.
  • Act as a resource to construction personnel to interpret historical resource regulations and how they are applied in the field.
  • Verify that historically sensitive areas are properly marked and flagged before work begins and inspect signage and flagging, when required.
  • Coordinate with field monitors and construction personnel to provide necessary information and facilitate regular communication among all parties.
  • Review field reports for consistency and accuracy.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with Indigenous communities in Ontario.
  • Support development and implementation of Indigenous participation and engagement plans.
  • Support the inclusion of Indigenous owned contractors into the project planning and construction process.
  • Support identification, tracking and monitoring of concerns, issues and interests identified by Indigenous groups.
  • Support integration of Indigenous knowledge into regulatory processes, environmental assessment, and project design
Perform other duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education
  • Minimum of a master's degree in archaeology, anthropology, or related field of study
  • License in good standing from the Ontario Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport
Experience
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of archaeological consulting experience in Ontario.
  • Experience related to right-of-way or utility construction.
  • Experience leading field work and coordinating with various field teams.
  • Strong knowledge of federal, provincial, and local legislation, regulations, and guidelines related to archaeology and heritage conservation.
  • Experience working with Indigenous communities and knowledge of Indigenous cultures, histories, and perspectives.
  • Experience with Indigenous knowledge systems and worldviews preferred.
  • Experience in building relationships and working with Indigenous businesses, community members, and organizations.
  • Indigenous focused regulatory and environmental assessment experience is an asset.
  • Possession of additional licenses or archaeological experience in other provincial jurisdictions is considered an asset.
Knowledge/Skills
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills – data collection and interpretation, technical report writing, regulatory permit applications, client communications, etc.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communications skills
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving skills, prioritizing and decision-making skills
  • Excellent attention to detail
  • Ability to manage multiple responsibilities simultaneously with minimal supervision
  • Detail-oriented, self-motivated and highly organized with strong problem-solving skills
  • Ability to build strong, lasting relationships with Indigenous communities and groups
  • Ability to work collaboratively with multidisciplinary project teams
  • Proficiency in working with GIS and data management systems
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Valid Driver’s License, with ability to maintain insurability under the company’s insurance carrier
  • Be physically able to perform work requiring extensive periods of bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting upwards of 40 lbs.
