Medical Science Liaison (MSL) – Rare Disease

Introduction

We are hiring a Medical Science Liaison for our client based in the Greater Toronto Area. Working within the rare disease space, the Medical Science Liaison has the primary responsibility of building key opinion leader (KOL) partnerships by engaging in the exchange of scientific data and other medical and/or scientific information with external stakeholders (HCPs, researchers, professional organization leadership, and formulary decision-makers) in the assigned Therapeutic Area (TA). Scientific engagements include establishing and maintaining educational and research collaborations; delivery of clinical, scientific, and technical education; building long term peer to peer relationships with key stakeholders by establishing rapport and providing scientific education. 70% travel is required in this position, covering the entirety of Canada.


Responsibilities

  • Build external partnerships with recognized community and academic medical center KOLs to identify and address scientific needs and to stay abreast of current scientific trends in assigned Therapeutic Area.
  • Identify and develop key thought leaders (national, regional, and local) for medical education, clinical research and publication opportunities
  • Cultivate existing and identify new collaborative KOL relationships for advisory boards, company-sponsored, investigator-initiated research, and speaker development
  • Provide field insights gained to field managers and team for elevation within organization
  • Identify opportunities and provide medical support including scientific education to healthcare professionals (HCPs) at key institutions
  • Foster professional relationships in key institutions for the company within an assigned geography
  • Recognize opportunities to facilitate cross-functional engagement based on customer needs
  • Identify and characterize need within therapeutic area related to real world evidence
  • Represent the company‘s Medical Affairs at national, regional, and local scientific meetings
  • Provide field-based medical affairs assistance for clinical research initiatives supported by the company, related to Investigator Initiated Trials, or other collaborative initiatives
  • Deliver high-caliber medical education presentations in a variety of settings
  • Gather and disseminate competitive intelligence from multiple sources in accordance with company policies
  • Participate and contribute to publication planning, clinical research, medical education material development, as well as internal training initiatives
  • Partner cross-functionally in assigned region, to optimize customer experience
  • Contribute to monthly medical meetings including journal clubs and team meetings
  • Lead and support internal medical projects
  • Support cross-functional projects and streamline medical input
  • Accurate and timely completion of all administrative reports, projects and required training
  • Participate in continuing education to maintain high level expertise in the assigned therapeutic areas


Requirements

  • Completion of a graduate level degree (PharmD., M.D., D.O, PhD, MSN, MS or equivalent healthcare professional degree) as well as relevant clinical experience
  • 3-5 years of MSL experience, specifically within rare disease
  • Experience working cross-functionally with different teams such as market access, commercial, etc…
  • Highly articulate and persuasive during formal and informal presentations; able to convey complex, scientific ideas fluently to any audience
  • Has the ability to tactfully provide scientifically sound, constructive feedback to national, regional, local key opinion leaders, and HCPs
  • Adept at confidently stating expert opinion while respecting the positions of others - can exert diplomacy while standing firm on a position
  • Builds and leverages strategic internal and external relationships to identify potential opportunities and partnerships to provide value and improve quality of care for providers and patients
  • Utilizes effective, professional communications to cultivate strong working relationships with internal and external colleagues
  • Work effectively on multi–disciplinary teams to achieve desired outcomes
  • Skillfully plans, prioritizes, and executes multiple responsibilities with minimal supervision in a highly dynamic work environment
  • Maintains a positive attitude and demonstrates flexibility during challenging situations
  • Excellent written business communication skills able to present complex messages to variety of audiences; effective listener, assessing need of audience
  • Critical Thinking Skill/Reasoning – Gathers relevant information systematically; seeks input from others; considers a broad range of issues or factors; grasps complexities and perceives relationships among data, events, problems or issues; uses accurate logic; generates suitable alternatives and accurate solutions
