Reporting to the Microbial Services Manager, and based at OSP’s Calgary Technical Centre, the Lab Technician will perform an integral role within the LifeCheck microbial testing product line. This position will be responsible for conducting microbial testing as requested by OSP clients, report writing, contributing to external scientific content, and various other client driven technical assignments.

As our Lab Technician, your day-to-day responsibilities will include:

  • Laboratory testing in support of OSP’s LifeCheck service offering. Laboratory tasks will include (but are not limited to):
  • General housekeeping and laboratory information management (LIMS)
  • ATP testing
  • Biocide efficacy testing
  • Microbial DNA extraction
  • qPCR
  • Targeted amplicon (gene) sequencing
  • Recording and interpreting data
  • Preparing client-facing technical reports in a timely and accurate manner
  • Assisting clients and internal sales with technical questions
  • Maintaining and aiding in the development of standard operating procedures and lab practices
  • Assisting in the development and enhancement of OSP IP, technology and service offerings
  • Commitment to health and safety

To be successful in this role, your resume will outline the following qualifications:

  • Diploma, Undergraduate or Graduate degree in a life sciences related field, with strong preference given to candidates with training in microbiology. Candidates with an education in chemistry will also be considered.
  • Experience in molecular microbiological test methods (nucleic acid extraction, PCR, etc.)
  • Proficiency in lab testing including aseptic techniques
  • Experience with oilfield chemistry and its applications
  • Related experience in the oil and gas industry is an asset
  • Strong competence in technical writing
  • WHMIS, TDG and H2S Alive training is an asset
