NovoPower is an early-stage deeptech/climatetech company, accelerated by Centech and Cycle Momentum, and supported by Schneider Electric. Together with our research partners at Concordia University, we won the Climate Solutions Breakthrough Research Prize last year, and our public profile is growing rapidly. We expect to bring our first products to market in 2025.


The position


NovoPower is expanding its engineering team, looking for experienced engineers with a passion for cleantech and sustainability. Our product development path calls upon expertise in refrigeration, machine design, electric power generation, hydraulics and controls.


We are seeking a control systems engineer with strong theoretical and practical experience in designing an implementing complex controllers and HMIs.


You will be responsible for the design, fabrication and testing of the control systems of our commercial prototypes and our initial product offering. You will report to and work closely with engineering director to ensure that the product meets performance objectives and customer requirements, and that the development process respects budgets and timelines.


You will be comfortable sourcing components, solutions and services, and solving problems of all types. Experimentation, data analysis, iteration and innovation are essential elements of this position. Documentation of innovation and IP creation is an essential part of the position.


You are well organized, and used to keeping detailed records.


This position is based at NovoPower’s offices and workshop in Montreal, with opportunities for occasional remote work as circumstances permit.


About you


You should be passionate about innovation and energy efficiency. You should have at least 5 years’ experience and thorough mastery of control systems and HMIs, from both a theoretical and practical perspective. Good familiarity with any of the following fields is a plus:

·      Electrical engineering;

·      Thermal engineering;

·      Fluid power engineering; and

·      Systems engineering.


You have strong organizational and management skills, and experience in managing experimentation and product development. You are naturally organized, and have experience developing and managing engineering documentation systems.


Key Skills: 

  • 5+ years experience in control system engineering, including strong theoretical background in optimization theory and practice and practical experience in designing HMIs for complex systems;
  • A self-starter, collaborator and team player; 
  • Excellent communication skills;
  • Adaptive working style suitable to working in a fast-paced environment; and
  • Opportunity to advance.

Your responsibilities

·      Work with CIO to determine work plan and budgets;

·      Design, implement and test control and HMI aspects of NovoPower system;

·      Work closely with an academic team at Concordia, as well as NovoPower’s technical advisors;

·      Design, document and report on product development process; and

·      Prepare innovation reports and contribute to patent applications, when appropriate.
