Underground Mine Shift Supervisor - Contract 12 Months

Sudbury, Ontario


Reporting to the Mine Captain, the supervisor is accountable for the front-line supervision of an underground crew to meet output and safety targets in keeping with health, safety and environmental regulations and company budget and policies.


Responsibilities:

  • Achieves annual crew safety targets through the implementation of the annual strategy, through crew safety meetings and the enforcement of standards and by providing a safe working environment.
  • Sets, communicates and measures performance levels and goals for crews and individuals and ensures that they produce the expected results using safe, standard, effective procedures.
  • Achieves required output targets by understanding and implementing the plan/schedule for work areas in compliance with mine standards and by coordinating the work of inter-related leaders and crews. The supervisor prepares and communicates general shift task line-ups to the leaders, prioritizes and resolves on-shift problems and issues.
  • Supervises maintenance tradesmen through the application of a preventative maintenance program, and planned work schedule to ensure that equipment is maintained and operable.
  • Fosters individual and team development by motivation, by encouraging and supporting ideas, by encouraging participation in planning and by good communication.
  • Further develops subordinates by providing guidance, assistance, arranging for training and by providing annual performance appraisals
  • Organizes subordinates for the shift to make the best use of human resources.
  • Ensures that the resources required by the crew are available when required by ordering parts and materials and through effective planning and scheduling utilizing defined processes.
  • Audits the physical condition of facilities and equipment through visual inspections and takes remedial action as required.
  • Meets inspection and record-keeping schedules for blasting, safety, task observations, daily timekeeping (including verification of accurate reporting of contract and company time, etc) by completing the required functions.
  • Ensures adequate communication across shifts by maintaining and reading the logs, meeting with peers and coordinating work with other supervisory personnel.
  • Screens and compiles out-of-scope work items the incentive system purposes
  • Is an effective owner of the company’s and individual’s interests, facilitates improvements and innovations through crew involvement and empowerment. Leads improvement projects as assigned.
  • Manages proactively employee relations issues utilizing HR, Union, and Management where appropriate.
  • Participates in appropriate training and complies with the scope of their responsibilities within the Sustainable Development Management System, which includes the Environmental Management System.
  • Supervises contractors as required, Crew size varies from 20 to 40 employees.


Qualifications

  • Experience in leading drill and blast lateral development teams within a project environment.
  • Experience overseeing contractors, ensuring project requirements and safety standards.
  • Ontario Common Core certification for first-line underground (UG) mine supervisors is an Asset.
  • Experience working in similar project within the mining sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of safety regulations and best practices in underground mining operations.
