DIRECTOR OF FINANCE
This position requires an energetic, composed, and thoughtful individual to work closely with the Managing Director and the Management Committee on both strategic and operational financial matters.
The Director of Finance will lead the firm through an accounting conversion to new software and will, at the same time, work with our existing staff to oversee and direct all financial activities and systems for the firm. The Director of Finance must be well-versed in all aspects of financial management and accounting. This is a hands-on role suited to an experienced accountant with proven leadership and change management skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide recommendations for financial strategies;
- Design, maintain, and manage finance and accounting policies, procedures, functions, vendor relationships, and systems, including internal controls;
- Design management reports and financial statements in a clear, concise and easily understood format;
- Maintain and manage partner compensation, including reporting and analysing. Make recommendations for change;
- Drive process improvement initiatives and identify opportunities to improve efficiencies operationally and financially;
- Monitor and communicate financial performance by measuring and analysing results, initiating corrective action, and minimizing the impact of variances;
- Partner with Managing Director to prepare financial reports for partnership including annual presentation and monthly KPI tracking;
- Ensure all tax returns, LawPro and LSO filings are prepared, paid and filed on time;
- Supervise the preparation and management of the firm's overall budget;
- Maintain banking relationships;
- Maintain strong working relationship with the Firm’s external accountant ensuring a smooth year end process;
- Work with the Accounting Manager to manage and direct finance and accounting department staff, including establishing goals and evaluating performance.
Requirements
- Bachelor's degree in accounting, finance, or related field;
- CPA with Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible finance work experience and proven success in a law firm or other professional services firm;
- High level of technical competency both with existing software (i.e., Excel) as well as emerging technologies;
- Experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint), Adobe Acrobat, and enterprise accounting and document management software. Experience with iManage would be an asset;
- Exemplary presentation, interpersonal, and written and verbal communication skills;
- Professional, tactful, honest, respectful, courteous, cooperative, and client-centric spirit that embraces diversity and inclusion;
- Strong leadership, collaborative, and consensus-building skills to work closely and successfully with all stakeholders;
- Strong project management skills, including demonstrated ability to prioritize, analyze, organize, attend to detail, follow through, delegate, and negotiate;
- Able to work well in a dynamic environment, and to respond effectively with calm, resourcefulness, and flexibility in demanding situations.
