The Investment Funds Institute of Canada (IFIC) is the voice of Canada’s investment industry. IFIC brings together approximately 150 organizations, including asset managers, dealers, and industry service providers. We advocate for effective regulation and policy that enable the industry to deliver positive outcomes for Canadian investors and are dedicated to fostering confidence in investment solutions, wealth advice and Canada’s capital markets. IFIC contributes significantly to the success and long-term sustainability of the asset management sector – our members manage approximately $2.5 trillion in mutual fund/ETF assets.
We have recently expanded our mandate to provide broader advocacy and services to investment dealers, including with respect to Canada’s capital markets. As such we are in the process of also expanding our research team.
Position Summary:
The Director of Research will lead strategic research initiatives to inform IFIC’s advocacy and policy development efforts. Reporting to the Vice-President, Research & Statistics, this role combines economic analysis, thought leadership, and collaboration to address critical issues in the investment management industry. The Director will develop actionable insights that support IFIC’s mission of enhancing the financial well-being of Canadians and advancing effective market regulation.
The Director of Research at IFIC is someone who possesses a deep understanding of economic analysis, financial markets, and securities regulation acquired through experience in the financial services sector. Exceptional research, analytical, and communication skills are essential for collaborating with internal teams, industry stakeholders, and regulatory bodies to address critical issues.
The role is ideal for a professional with a proven ability to execute impactful research projects and translate rigorous research into meaningful insights and actionable recommendations.

Key Responsibilities:
- Develop and execute research projects that align with IFIC’s strategic priorities, focusing on asset management, wealth management, and capital markets.
- Provide insights and analyze regulatory proposals and regulatory impacts on topics, including: retirement savings and investor outcomes; capital formation, market efficiency, and market trading; investing costs and performance; portfolio and market liquidity, and systemic risk; technology in finance and technological intermediation; behavourial economics; ESG/sustainable Investing
- Prepare clear and compelling position papers to influence policy decisions and regulatory frameworks.
- Critically evaluate academic, regulatory and industry research commenting on the investment management industry.
- Build on-going relations with key stakeholders.
- Represent IFIC in discussions with government agencies, regulatory bodies, and industry groups, serving as a thought leader on economic and financial topics.
- Monitor domestic and global market trends, identifying their implications for IFIC members and Canadian investment management and capital markets.
- Work with the Research & Statistics team to produce impactful publications and data visualizations for policymakers, the media, and members.
- Support and participate in working groups, and task forces as required and relevant to the role.
Qualifications:
- Master’s in Financial Economics or related degree.
- Demonstrated expertise in economic research, particularly in financial services, investment management, and capital markets.
- Strong understanding of Canada’s securities regulatory framework.
- Superior analytical and critical-thinking skills, with a track record of producing actionable insights.
- Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex research into accessible insights for diverse audiences.
- Proven ability to collaborate across teams.
- Familiarity with research methodologies and econometric analysis.
- Knowledge of French is an asset.
Work Environment:
This position is based in Toronto and operates in a hybrid work environment, requiring at least two days per week in IFIC’s downtown office. Occasional travel may be required. IFIC fosters an inclusive and flexible work environment that supports professional growth and work-life balance.
