PhotoMedicine Labs (PML):
At PhotoMedicine Labs, we specialize in designing cutting-edge optical systems for clinical and pre-clinical biomedical applications, enabling clinicians and researchers to access novel insights and capabilities. Since 2019, PML has secured over $10M in funding. Our interdisciplinary research bridges the gap between bench and bedside to improve global healthcare. We develop all hardware and software in-house, covering optical imaging, photon absorption, fiber optics, AI, and more. Our facilities include labs dedicated to discovery, imaging, machine learning, pre-clinical research, and pathology.
Overview:
We are seeking a skilled and detail-oriented Sr. Histology Lab Technician to join our team. As a key member of our laboratory, you will be responsible for processing, preparing, and analyzing tissue specimens. Your expertise and precision in histological techniques will play a critical role in advancing our research. In addition, you will contribute to the management of laboratory operations, ensuring compliance, maintaining a safe working environment, and supporting the smooth functioning of the lab. Key Responsibilities:
Perform tissue processing and embedding procedures to prepare specimens for microscopic analysis.
Ensure proper tissue fixation, dehydration, and infiltration with embedding medium.
Operate microtomes to cut thin tissue sections for slide preparation.
Maintain precision and consistency in section thickness according to established protocols.
Prepare high-quality microscope slides from embedded tissue blocks.
Stain slides using various histological stains to enhance tissue contrast for microscopic examination.
Perform staining techniques (e.g., H&E, Masson's trichrome, Jones silver) to highlight specific tissue components and aid in diagnosis.
Handle and care for laboratory animals according to ethical and regulatory standards.
Assist with tissue collection and dissection from animal models while ensuring humane treatment.
Maintain accurate records related to animal handling procedures and comply with institutional animal care protocols.
Maintain and monitor quality control processes to ensure accuracy and reliability of results.
Regularly calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment to meet quality standards.
Record and maintain accurate records of procedures, results, and other relevant data in compliance with laboratory protocols.
Prepare clear and concise reports and presentations summarizing findings for colleagues.
Oversee daily lab operations, including inventory management, supply ordering, and equipment maintenance.
Ensure compliance with safety regulations, biohazard protocols, and laboratory best practices.
Develop and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) for lab functions.
Coordinate lab inspections, audits, and safety training for lab staff.
Mentor and train junior technicians or interns in histological techniques and lab protocols.
Collaborate with fellow laboratory technicians, pathologists, and researchers to facilitate efficient workflow and achieve common goals.
Communicate effectively within the team and provide technical support and guidance as needed.
Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in Histology, Biology, Biomedical Science, or a related field is required.
Master’s degree in a relevant field (e.g., Molecular Biology, Biomedical Science, or Laboratory Management) is an asset.
Additional certifications or coursework in Laboratory Management, Quality Assurance, or Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) compliance are considered an asset.
Advanced training in cell culture and immunohistochemistry or other specialized staining techniques is advantageous.
Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience in a similar fast-paced laboratory setting, with some experience in lab management or leadership roles.
Strong knowledge of histological techniques, laboratory procedures, and equipment.
Experience in a GLP compliant laboratory an asset
Familiarity with laboratory safety standards, compliance regulations, and best practices.
Experience in developing and implementing SOPs and quality control procedures.
Skills:
Demonstrated strong organizational and leadership skills in managing day-to-day laboratory operations, including overseeing inventory control, ensuring compliance with safety protocols, and optimizing lab workflows to meet project deadlines.
Proven ability to independently manage and prioritize multiple lab tasks with minimal supervision, taking a proactive approach to identify areas for improvement and driving initiatives that enhance lab efficiency.
Possesses a solution-oriented mindset, skilled in troubleshooting complex technical issues related to laboratory equipment, procedures, and protocols, while proposing and implementing effective process improvements.
Strong written communication skills, adept at preparing clear and concise emails, detailed technical reports, and comprehensive documentation for internal teams (e.g., research and compliance) and external stakeholders (e.g., suppliers and regulatory bodies).
Experienced in liaising and coordinating with internal departments such as research, quality assurance, and regulatory compliance, as well as managing communication with external partners, including suppliers, auditors, and service providers, to ensure efficient lab operations and adherence to quality standards.
Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, with a track record of resolving equipment malfunctions, addressing procedural challenges, and ensuring laboratory outputs meet high-quality standards.
Strong understanding of laboratory safety standards, compliance regulations, and best practices.
Effective communication and collaboration abilities within a team environment, as well as with lab management.
