Note: While this role is remote, This role requires 10-15% travel to Montreal, CA.
At ABB, we are dedicated to addressing global challenges. Our core values: care, courage, curiosity, and collaboration - combined with a focus on diversity, inclusion, and equal opportunities - are key drivers in our aim to empower everyone to create sustainable solutions. Write the next chapter of your ABB story.
Your role and responsibilities
Imagine starting your day by diving into detailed technical assessments, ensuring that our wind, solar, and battery storage systems meet all regional and national grid codes. You will perform grid connection studies, including load flow, short circuit, stability, and protection coordination analyses (MOD-026, MOD-025, MOD-027, PRC19/24).
You’ll also conduct comprehensive grid connection studies, analyzing load flow, short circuits, stability, and protection coordination. Your expertise will be crucial as you collaborate with regulatory bodies and utilities to interpret and implement these grid code requirements.
- In the realm of power system design and optimization, you’ll be at the forefront. You’ll design, model, and simulate power systems to guarantee reliable and efficient operation within the grid. Developing strategies to optimize system performance, such as voltage regulation, frequency control, and reactive power management, will be part of your daily routine. You’ll also evaluate and recommend enhancements to our power generation equipment, ensuring we stay ahead in compliance and performance.
- Testing and validation will be another key area of your responsibilities. You’ll coordinate and perform grid compliance tests, including fault ride-through, harmonics, and dynamic performance tests. Developing and executing test plans for both new and existing power systems will be essential, and you’ll analyze the results to prepare comprehensive reports for regulatory authorities. •
- Staying on top of regulatory compliance and reporting will be vital. You’ll monitor changes in grid code regulations to ensure our ongoing compliance. Preparing and submitting necessary documentation, reports, and certifications to regulatory bodies and grid operators will be part of your role. You’ll also liaise with regulatory authorities, utilities, and other stakeholders to address compliance issues and resolve any grid connection challenges.
- Project management and coordination will round out your responsibilities. You’ll work closely with project managers, electrical engineers, and other technical teams to ensure grid compliance throughout the project lifecycle. Participating in project planning, scheduling, and execution will be key to ensuring timely completion of grid compliance activities. Your technical guidance and support will be invaluable to cross-functional teams, helping them navigate the complexities of grid compliance and power system engineering.
Qualifications for the role
- Master’s or PhD in Electrical Engineering
- Registered Professional Engineer (P.Eng) or eligible for immediate registration.
- Over five years of hands-on experience in power systems engineering. You’ve navigated the complexities of grid compliance and the integration of renewable energy systems, proving your mettle in conducting power system studies and grid compliance analysis.
- Proficiency in power system analysis software like PSS/E, PSCAD, and ETAP, coupled with a deep understanding of grid codes and regulatory standards.
- You excel in power system simulation, modeling, and testing techniques, ensuring our projects are not only compliant but also cutting-edge.
- Any certifications in renewable energy systems or grid compliance are preferred.
