The Board of Education for School District 72 (Campbell River) invites applications for a Director of Instruction vacancy, available August 1, 2024

School District 72 operates throughout a large geographic area. Campbell River and Quadra Island schools and our school board office are located on the traditional territory of the Lig??i?dax?? people. School District 72 also encompasses the traditional territory of the Klahoose (Cortes), K’ómoks (Sayward), and Xwe’malhkwu (Bute Inlet) First Nations.

The District also respects and values the relationships with all other First Nations, Métis, and Inuit peoples who reside in these territories. It is with respectful consideration that the programs and services provided to students and staff acknowledge their histories, cultural contributions, and contemporary concerns.

Campbell River is a family friendly, scenic, oceanfront community framed by extensive waterfront, west coast forests and snow-capped mountains. The area is renowned for its natural beauty and recreational opportunities such as skiing, kayaking, fishing, mountain biking, hiking, golf and endless opportunities to experience nature. The moderate climate allows residents to participate in numerous outdoor activities on a year-round basis.

School District 72 (Campbell River) is located on the east coast of central Vancouver Island, extending north to Sayward and south to Oyster River. The District also includes the outer islands of Read, Cortes, and Quadra. The District serves over 5,600 students in 18 schools with a diverse range of programs that are progressive and responsive to the educational needs and interests of students. It is a progressive school district committed to achievement of personal excellence for members of its learning community. The District has a solid base of excellent and innovative programs, competent professional personnel and community support. It is recognized for its collegial working environment, its commitment to student achievement, and its support for professional development. All of Campbell River’s schools provide service to a diverse student population that includes significant numbers of Indigenous learners, and we provide French Immersion education at two elementary schools, one middle, and one secondary school.

Responsibilities

As the Director of Instruction, you will be part of the Senior Leadership Team with the responsibility of leading teachers and administrators in evidence-based practices in curriculum, instruction, assessment, and social emotional learning (SEL) embedded with Indigenous world views and perspectives that optimize learning outcomes and experiences for students. The Director fosters a culture of continuous improvement and innovation in all areas in our K-12 system which includes literacy, numeracy, French immersion, career education, sexual health, place-based learning, and early learning.

The Director will strive to put the strategic plan into concrete and observable practices that benefit the students and families of which we serve.

The Ideal candidate must have the following:

a relevant Graduate degree or equivalent;

a valid B.C. Teaching certificate;

experience as a school or district leader with an outstanding record of effective leadership at the school or district level;

superior understanding and leadership of current evidence-based pedagogy, assessment, social emotional learning, and universal design for learning, Indigenous ways of knowing and doing and inclusionary practices;

proven ability to work well as an integral part of a team which would include senior leadership team, administrators, district teacher coordinators team, classroom teachers, support teachers, and paraprofessionals and support staff;

A valid driver’s license with access to a vehicle every day.

The ideal candidate will have the following:

a demonstratable commitment to increasing one’s personal knowledge, awareness, and understanding of the Indigenous Ways of Knowing and Being, as well as historical and current realities experienced by Indigenous peoples locally, nationally, and internationally;

a commitment to individual and team professional learning;

a collaborative, motivating, team-building style of leadership that can resolve conflict and build consensus;

an ability to identify areas of growth of staff and collaboratively develop growth plans;

an ability to use data-driven approaches to assist developing, monitoring, and improving student engagement and learning;

exemplary interpersonal, communication and organizational skills; leadership in developing school-based administrators’ expertise in the areas of curriculum, instruction, assessment and social emotional learning;

the ability to work collaboratively with the Inclusive Education and Indigenous Education Departments;

a commitment to standards of conduct, including behaving in a manner that is:respectful, professional, team-oriented, collegial, collaborative, ethical, honest, and trustworthy;

a commitment to, and acting in accordance with, the inclusion and engagement of people of diverse backgrounds in all aspects of school life and the school district as a workplace including, but not limited to, racialized communities, Indigenous Peoples, and the LGBTQ2S+ communities;

a demonstratable commitment to understand and implement the Truth and Reconciliation Calls to Action and the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples.
