Thank you for your interest in the Adult Literacy and Basic Skills Instructor position with the York Region District School Board. The Literacy and Basic Skills program is outcomes-based, providing opportunities for adults to upgrade their reading, writing, math, and computer literacy skills. Instructors provide learner-centered programming based on the transitional goal-path of the learner - i.e. employment, further education, or enhanced personal independence. Instructors work with each learner to develop an individualized Training Plan that serves as a guide to curriculum development and program delivery. Training Plans are also used for tracking learner’s progress as they move toward their transitional goal.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

Reports directly to the LBS Manager.

Ensures classes are delivered in accordance with Board and Ministry guidelines.

Conducts individualized goal setting which includes Training Plan development.

Employs instructional strategies that respond to individual learner needs and goals.

Incorporates computers as a learning tool; teaches general computer skills and introduces learners to e-Channel learning.

Maintains accurate and detailed records in all aspects of student Training Plans and learner achievement.

Evaluates and reports student progress.

Submits records in a timely manner to the LBS Office as required.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS:

Preference will be given to OCT qualified individuals.

University degree.

Good working knowledge of outcomes-based instruction and the LBS Program Guidelines.

Experience teaching adults in a multilevel environment is an asset.

Accounting skills are an asset.

Excellent spoken and written English.

Strong problem-solving skills.

Excellent computer skills.

Important Information for CUPE 1734 Members:

LA.11.7 Those twelve (12) month employees filling vacancies as a result of their applying to a job posting are to remain twelve (12) months at their position. Additional Information - Community and International Education Services (CIES):

The Community and International Education Services (CIES) hiring protocol allows teachers to teach and/or administrate for two CIES sessions per school year and/or administrate one term/session at a time. Candidates will only be allowed to teach and/or administrate a third session on an emergency basis in consideration of demand in a particular subject area, course or administrative position. A session is defined as the time needed to deliver a 4 - 6 week program (approximately 110 hours for credit courses) or the equivalent. CIES sessions include positions at e-Learning, Night School, Summer School, International Languages Secondary Credit and Elementary Non-Credit Programs and Summer Institute.
