Position: Project Manager, Communications and Public Engagement

Term: 1-Year Contract

Location: Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Reporting to: Senior Manager, Communications & Public Engagement

The Organization: Waterfront Toronto

Waterfront Toronto was established by the Government of Canada, the Province of Ontario and the City of Toronto in 2001 to oversee and lead the renewal of the city's waterfront. Our mandate is to deliver a revitalized waterfront that brings together the most innovative approaches to sustainable urban development, excellence in urban design, real estate development, and leading technology infrastructure. Working with the community, and with public and private-sector partners, Waterfront Toronto creates neighbourhoods anchored by parks and public spaces, and diverse, sustainable, mixed-use communities that offer a high quality of life for residents, employees, and visitors alike. We are transforming the waterfront for the use and enjoyment of the people of Toronto, Ontario and Canada, to foster economic growth and to redefine how the city, province and country are perceived by the world.

The Opportunity: Project Manager, Communications & Public Engagement

Waterfront Toronto is seeking a Project Manager, Communications & Public Engagement to lead project communications, public outreach and event management on a variety of active projects. This position plays a key role in planning and executing communications efforts for our ongoing projects as we work to advance waterfront revitalization through construction on the eastern waterfront, growing and maintaining Waterfront Toronto's relationships with its stakeholders, including the public. This position supports the planning and delivery of events associated with public and stakeholder outreach. The successful candidate will work across departments and disciplines to promote awareness and understanding of revitalization projects that are currently under construction.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Develop and execute communications strategies for active projects, creating awareness and understanding of the progress being made on waterfront revitalization.
  • Develop and execute proactive public and stakeholder outreach strategies to understand and address any impacts construction may have on the public before they occur.
  • Build digital and print communications assets (notices, maps, multimedia visuals).
  • Content planning: research, write and edit communications, including copy for newsletters, presentations, project webpages and social media posts.
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with multi-disciplinary internal teams and external project partners.
  • Plan and organize virtual and in-person public information sessions, committee meetings, site tours, and events.
  • Manage external consultants and vendors, as needed.
  • Identify issues and provide advice on all communications matters, both internal and external, including community stakeholder management, reputational risk and liability, and public engagement.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • Five to seven years' progressive experience in communications or public engagement.
  • Demonstrated experience with public/stakeholder outreach for large-scale construction programs, issues management and event management.
  • Excellent writing skills and the ability to translate complex or technical content so that it is understandable to lay audiences.
  • Ability to research, write and edit communications materials for construction notices, newsletters, presentations, project webpages and social media posts.
  • Thorough knowledge of digital communication tools and platforms and their interplay with traditional media.
  • Demonstrated ability to assess and manage interpersonal dynamics to maintain good working relationships with stakeholders.
  • Experience managing teams of peers and external consultants, providing focus and direction to ensure deadlines and objectives are met.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with the responsible and ethical use of Artificial Intelligence tools (i.e. Microsoft CoPilot) in supporting content creation considered an asset.
  • Expertise with Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Post-secondary Degree in communications, public relations, marketing, journalism, community engagement or a related field of study and/or the equivalent in education, experience and training.
  • CPRS, IABC membership or certification will be considered an asset.

Salary: We offer a competitive salary.

Other Considerations:

During this time, Waterfront Toronto is operating in a hybrid work environment. Employees are currently required to work in our office three days per week and have the option to work remotely for the remainder of the week. This is subject to change by the Corporation.
