LITIGATION LAWYER

The OPP Association (OPPA) is a labour organization that represents all uniform and civilian employees of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). There are over 6,200 uniform officers and approximately 3,600 civilian employees who are members of the OPPA. The OPPA’s Legal Department is seeking a litigation lawyer to join our legal team to advise and represent OPP officers in relation to police discipline proceedings.


Qualifications

  • Membership in good standing as a lawyer with the Law Society of Ontario.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of criminal law, administrative law, Charter of Rights, rules of evidence and procedure, and case law.
  • 1 to 5 years’ experience in legal advocacy gained through conducting hearings and or trials.
  • Knowledge and understanding of police discipline under the Police Services Act and the Community Safety and Policing Act.
  • Knowledge and understanding of police oversight including the Law Enforcement Complaints Agency (LECA) and the Special Investigations Unit (SIU).
  • Knowledge and understanding of labour law, human rights law, corporate law, and not-for-profit law would be an asset.



Duties and Responsibilities

  • Providing legal advice to OPP officers on police discipline, criminal law, and administrative law issues.
  • Preparing, conducting and representing OPP officers at discipline hearings and appeals.
  • Representing OPP officers at coroner’s inquests and public inquiries.
  • Providing legal advice to OPPA staff, OPPA representatives, the CAO and the Board of Directors.
  • Consulting and preparation of legal memoranda, briefing notes, and press releases.
  • Preparing and conducting presentations and internal education material.



Interpersonal and Communication Skills

  • Demonstrated judgment and analytical ability to research, analyze and provide legal advice.
  • Demonstrated writing and advocacy skills.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal, presentation and communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively and independently both with OPPA staff and with external stakeholders.
  • Technical skills to work effectively with computer technology and databases made available to professional staff.

Occasional travel within Ontario may be required. Salary will be commensurate with experience in the range of $120,000 to $145,000 annually.
