The Role:

Reporting directly to the COO, the R&D Manager will be responsible for managing product development and the full product lifecycle. The R&D Manager will create and test recipes, ingredients, and stay up to date on product trends. The R&D Manager will be expected to prepare documentation related to product recipes and analyze along with report the cost allocated to products and product trials. The R&D Manager will also be a key contributor in managing projects surrounding new products and new product launches.


Responsibilities:

  • Managing the product lifecycle including conceptualization, design, trials, creation and evaluation of new concepts, recipes, and products for targeted markets or customers and final product specifications;
  • Building key relationships with strategic suppliers to source new ingredients and vendors;
  • Test new and existing products and recipes to the group for feedback and product enhancement;
  • Stay abreast of trends and developments within the industry, channels, and techniques that will keep the brand in the forefront;
  • Participate in plant trials, overseeing all aspects of trial execution, including issuing recipes, ensuring products meet required specifications, collecting data, documenting outcomes and reporting trial costs to Finance;
  • Oversee product reformulations with raw material or recipe changes to ensure product quality is maintained;
  • Prepare all documentation (e.g. formulas, change notifications, etc.) required to support development process;
  • Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory requirements and standards throughout the product life cycle;
  • Project manage various R&D projects cross-functional (e.g. Production, QA, etc.);
  • Provide regular status launch and project updates to the Leadership team;
  • Track quarterly and annual Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) related to R&D;
  • Lead the development of R&D related standard operating procedures (SOPs);
  • Other relevant projects and tasks as assigned by the COO.


Qualifications & Experience:

  • Minimum 5 years of R&D experience in the food industry, managing product development;
  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Food Science, Engineering or another related field;
  • Thorough knowledge of R&D, food engineering and manufacturing;
  • Proven track record of successful product development;
  • Robust and up-to-date knowledge on Canadian and US food safety regulations and other related compliance programs;
  • Must have strong knowledge of food products, recipes, procedure writing and food costing;
  • Strong project management skills and in-process development in the food industry (PMP Certificate an asset);
  • Demonstrate analytical, problem solving and decision-making abilities;
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills;
  • Ability to persuade and positively influence at all levels of management;
  • Proficient in MS Office applications including Excel;
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
