We are currently looking for a highly motivated, enthusiastic and experienced Legal Counsel. In this challenging position, you will report to the Executive Director, Human Resources and provide general legal counsel to the College; manage all legal issues, litigation, negotiations and settlements and ensure CCNM's compliance with regulatory and contractual responsibilities.

 

Specifically, you will:

  • Manage all legal issues, claims and litigation processes, negotiations and settlements.
  • Interact with external legal counsel as required
  • Ensure security, confidentiality, completeness, and currency of all documents and materials related to all legal matters
  • Draft or review all institutional contracts and agreements based on negotiated terms
  • Develop all necessary waivers and letters of understanding as requested and required.
  • Ensure, where applicable, CCNM’s compliance with all regulatory changes
  • Routinely review all CCNM’s policies and procedures to assess risk and develop recommendations for changes to minimize risks and ensure legal/regulatory compliance.
  • Provides advice as needed on insurance held by the College including coordinating with the insurance brokers regarding issues that arise and renewals
  • Provides legal advice as needed to President’s Office and responds as requested to any queries as counsel
  • Serves as the College’s Privacy Officer
  • Maintain CCNM's policies and procedures to assess risk and develop recommendations for changes to minimize risks and ensure legal/regulatory compliance.
  • Prepare legal briefs, develops strategy, arguments and testimony in preparation for presentation of case


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor of Laws degree (LLB or JD) from an accredited university
  • Active registrant with The Law Society of Upper Canada
  • Minimum two years related experience and/or training in the areas of policy creation and interpretation, dispute resolution, contracts and disciplinary/appeals administration
  • Established ability to read, analyze and interpret complex documents
  • Demonstrated success in defining problems, collecting research/data, establishing facts and drawing conclusions
  • Ability to respond effectively and with tact and discretion to sensitive inquiries or complaints
  • Exceptional communication skills: both written and verbal
  • Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics
  • Strong interpersonal skills to deal effectively with individuals at all levels within the organization
  • Demonstrated leadership skills – able to prioritize assignments and assist more junior employees as required
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office
