MWF 370 - Elective Placement - Fall 2024

1 Position

This four-twelve week course provides students with the opportunity to participate in an elective placement. Midwifery Program students will have the opportunity to address additional learning needs as identified in a learning contract developed with the faculty. It is also available to Special Students by permission of the program. Students enrolled in this course may provide care in home and hospital settings under the supervision of a midwife clinical preceptor and a member of the midwifery faculty. This course is offered based on availability of preceptors and faculty. This course is graded on a pass/fail basis. See teaching department for consent criteria.

Type, Duration and Form of Appointment:

This is a part-time appointment. MWF 370 is a one semester course that includes in-person teaching at the university and virtual online teaching. Students interact with faculty and peers online, via web formats, and attend simulations at the university in the clinical experience suites. The instructor will provide office hours for tutoring and lab simulation hours. The instructor might anticipate scheduling 4 hours for weekly lab simulation appointments (for students returning from leaves, or students requiring remediation) and 4 to 5 hours per week for development of digital learning content. The instructor will assist with curriculum development of simulation teaching, assessment and evaluation.

Duties to Include:

Preparation for course, teach course assigned according to prescribed curriculum and methods, evaluate the work of students, counsel students, may follow students in out-of-session and provisional placements through completion of all course requirements, participate in examination preparation and invigilation, and in departmental course review and planning activities. To perform other functions as customarily performed by academic personnel including participation in orientation, faculty development sessions, TMU MEP working and planning meetings, departmental meetings and committees, in addition to other duties as stated in Article 17 of the Collective Agreement. Innovative simulation and online OSCE evaluation will be incorporated using high and low-fidelity simulation. 

Qualifications

Qualifications:

-Must be a Registered Midwife in a Canadian jurisdiction with 5 years of experience in Ontario midwifery practice.

-Must have completed a Baccalaureate degree or the equivalent.

-Having completed/in the process of completing a Master’s degree in a related discipline is preferred.

-Currently practicing regulated midwifery in a Canadian jurisdiction with midwifery professional association membership an asset.

-Membership in the Association of Ontario Midwives and registration with the College of Midwives of Ontario is an asset.

-Previous experience teaching a senior midwifery clinical course in the MEP is preferred, or in simulated teaching such as MEP or AOM ESW, SOGC ALARM course, Neonatal Resuscitation Program.
