Project Engineer-In-Training

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Startec is currently recruiting for a Project Engineer-In-Training (E.I.T.)  to work at our Shepard Office (9423 Shepard Rd SE, Calgary, AB, T2C 4R6). This position will participate in Startec's rotation program where the successful candidate will rotate between Startec Compression & Process and Startec Service. This opportunity will provide comprehensive learning opportunities and professional growth. This program spans a duration of two year, during which the Project E.I.T will cycle through our following departments: Applications & Product Development, Package Engineering, Integrated Projects, and our Projects group. 

The Project Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T) will be responsible for providing support in the design, development, and implementation of packaging and refrigeration solutions for our products. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to drive innovative design solutions, conducting thorough analyses to optimize efficiency, and adhering to industry standards and regulatory guidelines. The Project Engineer-in-Training (E.I.T) will manage and assist with all technical and manufacturing issues on multiple projects, provide engineering support to the Service department during equipment commissioning and start-up, and contribute to the continuous improvement initiatives of the Engineering Department.

KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS (KPI):

ENGINEERING SUPPORT (Weighting 50%)Technical Design & Analysis Assist in the review of the process simulation. Ensures the completion of any additional process design tasks, including simulation for pipe sizing and equipment blow-down rates. Assists in the preparation of 3D models, GA, structural drawings, and spool drawings according to customer specifications and in-house guidelines. Participates in-house 3D model review meetings with designers and manufacturing personnel, ensuring compliance with design review checklists. Proficient with NAVISWORK Freedom for 3D Model Review. Design & Documentation Assists in marking up P&IDs or assigns the task to designers, arranges and chairs in-house P&ID review meetings, submits P&IDs to the customer, and coordinates revisions. Assists the Process Engineer's work related to PSVs and control valves, among others. Assist the third-party Structural Engineer's work involving weight estimates, preliminary structural beam size selection, and communication for final approval. Assists the Mechanical Engineer's work involving pressure vessel and heat exchanger design for final approval. Help find the information required for the third-party Pipe Stress Engineer to perform the Pipe Stress Analysis and review different recommendations and insure they get incorporated into the piping model during model reviews. Get familiarity with process simulation software to model and analyze different scenarios for optimal process design. Help assigns tasks or collaborates with the Process Engineer to establish the Control philosophy and Shutdown key Equipment & Materials Management Support Creates and submits Purchase Requisitions to the procurement team when needed, obtaining comparative pricing for agreed-upon equipment. Help assigns tasks or assist the Instrumentation Specialist's work, ensuring accurate creation of the Instrument Bill of Material (BOM) and compliance with material selection, electrical classification, and certification requirements. Ability to size and select equipment, such as pumps, compressors, heat exchangers, air coolers, and pressure vessels, based on process requirements and engineering calculations. Gain the ability to review detailed technical drawings, specifications, and documentation for different designs. Gain proficiency in creating specifications, Bills of Materials (BOMs), and standard operating procedures. Technical Communication & Guidance Communicates clearly with various project personnel and provides technical insight for resolution of technical, design and fabrication challenges. Communicates effectively between various departments (Engineering, Project Management, Drafting, Sales, QA/QC, Fabrication, Purchasing and Service) Help provide support to the Service group during equipment commissioning and start-up, which might involve site visits. Participates HAZOP meetings as required, contributing feedback from a technical standpoint. Gain familiarity with different NDE testing methods. PROJECT MANAGEMENT SUPPORT (Weighting 35%)Project Collaboration Reviews all customer specifications applied to a project and assign technical spec reviews to the specific engineering service specialty (Mechanical, Process, Structural, etc.) on the project to ensure package is built to the agreed specifications. Review the project "Scheduler" to ensure the timely completion of engineering deliverables. Review the Proposal and the project specifications accepted by the clients, ensuring adherence to them. Assists Project Manager with estimating costs and schedule impacts for change orders. Assist with the generation of Project Operating and Maintenance Manuals. Perform project final P&ID walkthrough. Participates in project "Closeout" and startup "Lessons Learned" meetings, contributing feedback to Project Managers. Client Collaboration Collaborate closely with clients to understand their requirements, address concerns, and provide technical solutions that align with their business needs. Participate in client meetings, technical presentations, and discussions. Assist in technical interactions with the customer. QUALITY CONTROL & DOCUMENTATION COMPLIANCE (Weighting 20%)Quality Control Review Collaborate closely with clients to understand their requirements, address concerns, and provide technical solutions that align with their business needs. Participate in client meetings, technical presentations, and discussions. Assist in technical interactions with the customer. Documentation & Reporting Prepares the preparation of vessel datasheets and forwards them to the mechanical engineer for review. Prepares the preparation of equipment datasheets for vessels, exchangers, pumps, etc. Help gather "As Built" documentation. Help complete the project's "Ship Loose List" in coordination with the manufacturing team. Prepares any necessary calculations (e.g., pneumatic test requirements, pipe thickness calculations, etc.) and technical documentation (e.g., piping registration) as required. Reviews and help issue all drawings following Startec's drawing approval procedures and project schedule. Review vendor drawings in accordance with the project schedule CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT (Weighting 5%)Continuous Improvement & Innovation Document lessons learned of current projects. Stay updated with industry advancements and trends in packaging design and technology. Seek opportunities for training and for growing technical abilities

QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor's degree in, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related field. Enrollment as an Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or ability to obtain EIT status. Previous experience working in a gas processing and manufacturing related industry is considered an asset. Basic knowledge of engineering principles and practices Proficiency in relevant engineering software and tools. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams. Project management skills, including the ability to manage timelines, budgets, and resources. Ability to work effectively in a team-oriented environment. Detail-oriented with strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Customer focused.
