Reporting to the VP, Sustainability & Partnerships, within the Strategy and Growth team, the successful candidate will have accountabilities for the Partnerships & Investments function within Sun Life Canada. This comprises of three main accountabilities (1) drive analysis and support of new partnership, investment and M&A opportunities across Canada (2) support execution of on-going governance of investments and (3) drive proactive and reactive partnership discussions with start-up and venture capital firms. The candidate is expected to thrive in a fast-paced environment and should be independent in their ability to execute work and able to work effectively with senior stakeholders across Sun Life Canada.

What will you do?

Drive analysis and support of new partnership, investment and M&A opportunities across Canada

Working closely with the Corporate Development team and relevant business units(BUs), support high priority partnership, investment and M&A opportunities. Including, development of strategic rationale, target identification, synergy analysis and any other relevant analysis

Business lead for cross-BU or adjacency opportunities across SL Canada. Including identification of high-priority industries / markets and targets. 

Develop recommendations for go / no go decisions on key investments

Influence and get buy-in from key BU leaders at VP and SVP levels

Monitor our principles for when to buy vs. invest vs. partner

Identify and manage governance framework for equity investments

Support on-going investment decisions required (further investment, divestment, valuation, etc), with input from BUs and Corporate Development team

Drive proactive and reactive partnership discussions with high-priority external partners

Working with BUs and the Canada Sustainability team, identify and prioritize areas for external partnerships aligned with growth and impact strategies

Screen potential partners and support BUs in determining if there is high potential partnership opportunity

What do you need to succeed?

Excellent oral and written communication, presentation skills, and strong interpersonal skills

Strong, analytically-anchored problem solving skills, with a solid background working with data, conducting analysis, interpreting results, and writing reports/presentations

Strong influencing skills and stakeholder management skills, including ability to interact with and influence senior executives

Strong results-oriented project management skills; well organized, with a high attention to details

Problem Solving

Able to work independently on assignments with appropriate judgement, and demonstrate resourcefulness and perseverance in solving problems and removing roadblocks

Minimum of 5+ years relevant business experience, ideally with experience in insurance or financial services; experience in/or knowledge of Sun Life’s business would be an asset but not required

University degree in business or related discipline; MBA, CPA or CFA would be an asset

Extensive background in at least one of strategic partnerships, innovation and/or M&A,

Experience working and/or partnering with start-ups

Experience analyzing and solving complex business problems

Experience in financial analytics, including using modelling tools and techniques

Strong working knowledge of Microsoft Office products (Excel, PowerPoint, Word)

As this position is posted in several locations, we specify that bilingualism (French, English, both oral and written) is required for Quebec only for the frequent interactions with English and French-speaking colleagues or internal partners across Canada or worldwide.
