Job Description

The  Anaesthesia Assistant (AA) works closely with anesthesiologists as an integral member of the anesthesia care team to provide clinical and technical support to the operating room, peri-operative/post-operative, labour and delivery and all other areas where anesthesia are involved. The AA is also an integral member of the allied health team to which there are accountabilities for professional practice, education and research. Osler is seeking highly motivated individuals with the desire and flexibility to meet the requirements of evolving and expanding roles and responsibilities, as part of the anesthesia care team.

Accountabilities:

  • Administer anesthetic gases and medications
  • Perform activities such as the provision of conscious sedation
  • Monitoring stable patients under general anesthesia
  • Assisting with regional and neuraxial procedures, airway management, insertion and management of intravenous and arterial lines
  • Provide constant assessment and evaluative monitoring of the depth of anesthesia all under the direct supervision of the anesthesiologist and with the use of medical directives, as applicable

Qualifications

  • Graduate from an Accredited Respiratory Therapy or Nursing Program
  • Completion of the Michener Institute (TMI) Anesthesia Assistant Program or equivalent
  • Registered with the College of Respiratory Therapists of Ontario or the College of Nurses of Ontario required
  • Bachelor's Degree or recognized equivalent preferred
  • Minimum two years current experience in the anesthesia assistant role in operating room required
  • Certified Clinical Anesthesia Assistant preferred
  • Paediatric experience preferred
  • Completion of a Basic Cardiac Life Support and Advanced Cardiac Life Support program required
  • Ability to work independently
  • Effective communication skills
  • Commitment to personal and professional development
  • Ability to regularly work and travel between all hospital sites as required


Additional Information

Hours: Currently days/evenings, 8 hour shifts with weekend and on-call standby required (subject to change in accordance with operational requirements)
