Nature and Scope
The Academic Coach reports directly to their respective Program Coordinator. The incumbent mentors SIIT students in the classroom, laboratory or shop environments and assists students during consultation hours. This position will positively promote and create an environment that demonstrates SIIT's vision, mission, and mandate.


General Accountability
The Academic Coach is a professional coach and mentor who guides adult learners through the Business program. The role involves motivating adult learners and implementing strategies that will help grow through field practicum placements. Working collaboratively with a team of educational professionals, the Academic Coach will demonstrate a strong commitment to create and maintain a creative and positive learning environment at SIIT. This position provides additional support as required and includes the following broad range of accountabilities:

Specific Accountabilities

Instruction and Administration

  • Help students navigate career opportunities and secure field placement opportunities
  • Show students how to conduct engaging presentations
  • Teach the students life skills and soft skills
  • Monitor student success during field placements
  • Participate in classroom initiatives such as, but not limited to, independent work periods, group work, study sessions etc.
  • Prepare sessions in conjunction with instructors to ensure students meet academic standards


Student Success

  • Respect, honour and acknowledge the uniqueness of each student including: their unique languages, cultures, traditions, histories and prior learning and life experiences
  • Create and maintain a positive learning environment that provides the opportunity for meaningful learning and academic progress
  • Assess students' strengths and weaknesses and guide development
  • Assist students in utilizing their personal skills to enhance Mental Health and Wellness practices
  • Assist students with varying academic proficiency in a group setting or one -to- one
  • Assist students to discover and overcome their personal barriers and set goals; provide advice, motivation, and direction regarding training or career planning that is aligned with their skill set

Relationship Management & Leadership

  • Adhere to and promote academic regulations and SIIT policies and procedures
  • Develop and maintain respectful relations through the use of problem solving and constructive resolution of student issues
  • Ensure a positive, diverse and inclusive work and learning environment
  • Keep students accountable and motivated
  • Communicate with students to better understand their vision and goals
  • Develop and maintain relationships with employers in both private and public sectors and First Nations across the Province
  • Coordinate with prospective industry and community partners to build relationships geared towards the creation of potential field placements for SIIT students
  • Work with employers to coordinate placements and on-site visits
  • Assist students on an individual basis to positively adjust to placements and help the student understand the employers' expectations to be successful

Required Qualification and Experience: A Business or Education degree or diploma is preferred. A minimum of two years' related experience is required. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered. An understanding of adult learning theories and principals is considered an asset. For success in this position, a genuine commitment to help adults learn and succeed is required. Knowledge of First Nations Culture and organizations would be an asset.
