ORGANIZATION

The Canadian Sport Institute Ontario (CSIO) is the multi-sport organization facilitating high performance sport development in Ontario, in partnership with Provincial and National Sport Organizations. The
CSIO is a not-for-profit sport organization that supports high performance athletes and coaches in Ontario by delivering sport science, sport medicine and high performance pathways solutions, support and education.

The Performance Services business unit contributes to CSIO’s goals in the following ways:

· Recruitment, development, and retention of Performance Sciences (Sport Science and Sport Medicine disciplines), Research & Innovation Leaders & Practitioners

· Delivering best-in-class Performance Solutions for National & Provincial Sport Organizations (NSOs & PSOs)

· Delivering Partnership Management, Service Agreements, and Quality Assurance measures for our NSO performance partners

· Supporting a practitioner development pathway in alignment with Sport Scientist Canada (SSC)

POSITION SUMMARY

The Manager, Strength and Conditioning is a leadership role within the Performance Services business unit at CSIO. 

This role has the following core functions:

· Strategically lead the strength training facilities and tools (hardware and software) at all CSIO sites, and operationally oversee the strength training facilities and tools at TPASC

· Lead a strength and conditioning community of practice at CSIO that promotes appropriate competency development

· Provide management and mentorship for CSIO strength and conditioning practitioners

· Deliver best-in-class performance support to targeted National Sport Organizations and athletes.

The Manager, Strength and Conditioning will leverage strong organizational skills, proven leadership abilities, a collaborative nature, and background in performance support, to play a leading role in the development of an applied science culture at CSIO that will enhance the pathway and performance outcomes for Team Canada.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES

Facilities and Equipment

· Manage the head office strength and conditioning equipment turnover/renewal plans, contribute to equipment budget planning under approval of Performance Services Director

· Ensure alignment and best practices are shared across all CSIO facilities

· Ensure that CSIO TPASC facilities provide an inclusive, safe, and effective daily training environment

· Implement risk control measures, and provide ongoing monitoring and evaluation of risk measures

· Ensure equipment maintenance is performed in a timely manner

· Regularly audit equipment and software, and make recommendations to adapt to an evolving high-performance landscape

· Work collaboratively to investigate and implement physical monitoring systems and instrument the strength training area with sensors and/or visual feedback systems to enhance the effectiveness of training equipment

· Work collaboratively to ensure testing procedures and reporting methods of S&C staff lead to accurate, reliable, and objective results

Leadership and Mentorship

· Responsible for hiring, developing, and supervising an integrated team of strength and conditioning staff and contractors

· Lead the onboarding and education of practitioners working in the strength and conditioning environment to ensure that all CSIO policies and best practice guidelines for techniques and equipment are followed

· Work with practitioners to ensure the processes of obtaining athlete consent and pre-participation screening are completed before training or testing commences

· Work with individual team members and technical experts to identify and guide individual training and development in a professional and respectful manner

· Foster connection with Sport Scientist Canada Discipline Lead(s), remaining up to date on activities and initiatives that may benefit CSIO practitioners

· Provide mentorship for practitioners, including areas such as weightlifting technique, program design, exercise coaching and correction, and development of Sport Scientist Canada high performance competencies

· Work collaboratively to develop and/or implement group education and training, targeting opportunities to develop multidisciplinary skill sets and interdisciplinary collaboration, in alignment with Sport Scientist Canada initiatives where possible

· Oversee the Strength and Conditioning budget, ensuring programs and expenses remain on budget

· Help to meet business unit financial goals without sacrificing staff satisfaction

· Support the implementation of an integrated practitioner model that ensures practitioners are delivering support across a breadth of sports based on acute and chronic needs

· Oversee and deliver performance management for all assigned staff members

· Remain at the forefront of relevant research, innovation, and applied methods as it pertains to the strength and conditioning environment

· Support a high performing people-first culture

Performance Support

· Foster effective working relationships with sport coaches and technical leaders in order to understand and influence sport program goals and culture

· In collaboration with coaching staff, develop and deliver best-in-class strength and conditioning support in the daily training environment

· When appropriate, provide best-in-class support at camps and/or competitions

· Work with athletes and coaches to develop and implement sport science protocols, travel strategies, and physical conditioning programs for maximal physical and/or physiological adaptation

· In collaboration with the IST and coaching staff, implement thorough monitoring, tracking, and testing processes to ensure that athletes are making desired progress

· Evaluate current research to broaden knowledge of the sport as well as general knowledge of trends and findings in high performance sport science in general

· In collaboration with the IST and coaching staff, conduct, commission and collaborate on research and innovation projects in an effort to further the discipline and sport

· Provide comprehensive feedback (presentations, publications, report) of results and interpretation to athletes, coaches and IST members as required

· Work using a collaborative approach to tackle sport specific challenges and questions

· Consult and refer specific athlete issues to relevant practitioners within the IST

· Maintain an accurate record of work conducted

· Work with the Performance Services leadership team and Director to shape the overall direction and operation of the business unit

· Actively contribute to Sport Scientist Canada initiatives, and represent CSIO on external committees or working groups where appropriate

· Adhere to any professional codes of conduct appropriate to the profession or other codes of conduct that might be deemed applicable to sports science and sports medicine practitioners in general

· Be an active member of CSIO by participating in and/or presenting at staff meetings, committees, other meetings, and seminars as required

· Maintain a proactive approach to personal Professional Development and actively participate in CSIO professional development programs and processes

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Mandatory Requirements and Experience

· Graduate degree (M.Sc.) in a sport science discipline (biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, data science, nutrition, performance analysis, etc.)

· Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) with the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA), Canadian Strength and Conditioning Professional (CSCP) with the Canadian Strength and Conditioning Association (CSCA), or international equivalent

· Minimum 8 years’ experience working in a high performance sport environment

· Demonstrated leadership and management experience, including experience leading multi-disciplinary Integrated Support Teams

· Strong knowledge and/or academic training across multiple sport science and/or sport medicine disciplines

· Demonstrated success in applying scientific principles for performance enhancement

· Strong coaching and communication skills

· Experience with database software and data management procedures

· Understand and adhere to provincial and federal laws and ethics around data management and data privacy

· Able to interpret and communicate data collection, analysis, and results

· Eligible to work in Canada

Desired Experience, Qualifications and Skills

· Doctorate degree in a sport science discipline (biomechanics, physiology, kinesiology, data science, nutrition, performance analysis, etc.)

· Formal leadership training

· Sport Scientist Canada High Performance Certification at the Practitioner level or higher

· Defined programming abilities in one or more of the following languages (R, Python, Julia, Labview, Matlab)

· Background as a high performance coach or athlete

· Bilingualism in French and English an asset
