About The Opportunity

Working as an integral part of the Ta na wa Yúus ta Stitúyntsam̓ Rights and Title Department, reporting directly to Capilano Fish Guardian Supervisor, Capilano Fish Guardians are responsible for monitoring fishing activities on the Capilano River within Xwmelch’tstn (Capilano Reserve) and maintaining healthy runs of salmon up the Capilano River through communication with the Capilano Fish Hatchery. Capilano Fish Guardians should understand traditional teachings have a strong connection to the land and water. Capilano Fish Guardians protect Squamish Nation's fish harvesting rights by providing a safe place for membership to fish for food, social and ceremonial purposes. They act as seasonal river monitors, looking after fishery resources and habitat and uphold the Squamish Nation Fishing Bylaw. Capilano Fish Guardians work from June to October and oversee day-to-day operations of the Capilano River within Capilano Reserve. Capilano Fish Guardians work independently and alongside other guardians in shifts so that there is safe monitoring of the river throughout all hours of the day. Guardians provide on-site support and education to fishers, youth mentorship, and fisheries-related incident response. This role is field based during the fishing season; Guardians must be physically fit and able to work outside for long periods of time in all weather conditions. Capilano Fish Guardians will work in collaboration with, and report to, the Capilano Fish Guardian Supervisor. The Capilano Fish Guardians may be required to take training related to safety and environmental monitoring. Capilano Fish Guardians are not permitted to fish while working on shift.

What You Bring

Combination of education and experience. Team-oriented with a positive, approachable attitude. Ability to relate with others and deliver negative information tactfully and peacefully when required. High level of emotional intelligence, patience, integrity, and conflict resolution skills. Knowledge of local salmon species life cycles and strong fish identification skills. Ability to transcribe fish harvest data, total fish numbers, temperature, and river level onto daily report forms. Knowledge of Squamish Nation Fisheries Bylaws. Can lift 50 pounds and is physically able to perform on-site duties as required.

   Salary: $25.68 per hour.
