Experience working with children to facilitate belongoing within outdoors-based programs
Horse and riding experience (any discipline)
Previous coaching and/or guiding experience is an asset
Previous supervisory experience is an asset
Excellent verbal and written communication skills
Good emotional fitness (zero tolerance for directing negative feelings at participants, staff, animals, or equipment)
Current Standard First Aid and CPR C certification (CPR recertified within the last 12 months) at minimum; Wilderness First Aid is an asset
Evidence of a clear Police Information Check and Vulnerable Sector Search

What does this role look like at YMCA Calgary?

Duties and Responsibilities include:
Lead YMCA horse programming, including horsemanship classes, horseback riding lessons, arena rides and guided trail rides for participants with varied and often limited experience and skill
Contribute to barn operations and herd maintenance including catching, grooming, and saddling horses, identifying horse health concerns, behaviour management and guidance, basic veterinary care, cleaning, and barn chores.
Work as part of a collaborative team to support all campers, participants, and fellow staff.
Support the Ranch and all program areas at CCH
Be responsible for the risk management and comfort of participants
Support the program and Ranch operation’s Health and Safety obligations as defined by law and YMCA policies
Support group development and create a positive learning environment for all participants and staff
Support the planning and facilitation of intentional, developmentally appropriate play-based learning activities. This focuses on engagement in active play outside, both scheduled and creative activities
Contribute to YMCA outdoors programming and facilitate horse programs that support camp experience impact goals
Support the development of a team through training, supervising, and providing feedback, both positive and constructive to each staff member
Establish and maintain effective communication standards with stakeholders and professionally represent YMCA Calgary both internally and with the broader community
Provide leadership that ensures program quality, and the delivery of excellent service
Effectively communicate and act as a liaison between departments and with vendors, clients, and community members

Wranglers will work in the outdoors for the majority of each day and are required to work outdoors in all weather conditions. Accommodations are in tipis or cabins, and may be nearby to campers to provide supervision. Wranglers will need to lift program supplies including hay, feed, and horse gear, as well as walk, bend, stand, and ride for extended periods of time.
The Wrangler position is physically demanding and involves long periods of walking, standing, participating in physical activity (including horseback riding), and working with horses. Wranglers will be outside every day and in all weather conditions. The position requires moderate to heavy bending, lifting, and repetitive movements as needed during Ranch programs and barn chores. Wranglers may be delegated to be available by a YMCA Calgary issue cell phone in the event of a horse-related emergency.
