Job Description

Nurse Educator - Surgery Program (Peri-Operative Services)

The Nurse Educator is responsible, in collaboration with Program Leadership, for the assessment, implementation, planning, evaluation and supportive application of existing and new clinical knowledge and the translation of knowledge to practice.

In this role you will have cross-site responsibility within the perioperative areas, specifically in the surgical ambulatory clinics and surgical preparation and procedures areas. While training of new peri-operative nurses using AORN learning modules will be the responsibility of all Peri-operative educators, this role will support the Perioperative Managers in the coordination of identified nurses for onsite AORN training and learning.

What must you have?

Current certificate of competence from the College of Nurses of Ontario as an RN or RN (EC), in good standing. Perioperative Nursing Certificate with working understanding of ORNAC Standards Specialty Credentialing through Canadian Nurses Association in Perioperative Nursing preferred. Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. Master’s degree in nursing or equivalent (Masters Required or In-progress). Current Basic Cardiac Life Support

What else do you bring?

Minimum of five (5) years of relevant OR experience with PACU & Day Surgery experience required. Effective knowledge transfer, program planning and evaluation skills. Superior interpersonal, coaching, and leadership skills to facilitate identification and development of staff learning needs. Promotes professional practice and excellence in evidence-based, patient centered care. In partnership with clinical leadership, plans, develops, implements and evaluates programs to meet the educational needs of nursing staff as well as other members of the clinical team. Uses and applies adult learning principles in teaching and learning opportunities. Demonstrates advanced clinical assessment skills. Strong interpersonal, verbal and writing skills in order to successfully present and facilitate with a wide variety of audiences. Proven analytical thinking and problem-solving skills. Proven ability to achieve outcomes through programs delivered to individuals and groups. Demonstrates ability to work independently and as a member of an interprofessional team. Demonstrates ability to effectively plan, organize and prioritize work in a continuously changing environment. Demonstrates ability to effectively identify needs and facilitate practice related change. Computer literacy in a Windows environment utilizing Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others. Proven attendance record. Demonstrates understanding and complies with patient and staff safety policies and procedures that foster a safe and inclusive environment for all. Ability to perform the essential duties of the job. Effectively uses empathy in interactions with others. Demonstrates behaviours consistent with Mackenzie Health’s Commitment to Caring and values – Excellence, Leadership and Empathy. Preferably, your profile also includes:

National certification in Perioperative Nursing from the Canadian Nurses Association, preferred. Member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario, or another organization preferred.
