Redwater, Canada Cando Rail & Terminals Full time

The Superintendent is responsible for providing a safe, customer oriented, cost effective response to our customers’ rail transport, industrial switching, transloading, and track maintenance needs. The Superintendent is Cando’s primary customer liaison, and is responsible for the execution of all aspects of the day to day and long-term operations on Cando owned property and customer’s site(s). This includes safety, standard operating procedures, people management, training compliance, procedural and rules/regulatory compliance. This position is located near Redwater, AB

Roles and Responsibilities

Safety

Leads all initiatives related to Cando’s Safety Management Systems such as employee efficiency testing and incident reporting Ensures compliance to rules and regulatory bodies as they relate to safety Leads safe work practices; responsible for mentoring oversight of employees in all aspects of industrial rail operations and transloading Provides safety focused initiative support to Cando customers including on site meetings as required

Planning & Service Delivery

Ensures service is in keeping with Cando’s vision and guides the team in developing and maintaining plans for continuing operations and continuous improvement Ensures the employees and/or subcontractors have the qualifications, understanding, skills, training, and resources to achieve superior service delivery Ensures efficient work systems and procedures are in place Builds and maintains positive and healthy relationships with all stakeholders and promotes harmonious employee/customer/contractor relations Conducts field activities including incident investigations and regulatory compliance initiatives

Leadership & Employee Development

Influences and inspires others to achieve perform at a high level Builds and maintains positive and healthy relationships and a strong team culture Leads others in adapting to innovative work environments and ensures awareness of company initiatives, decisions, policies, etc. are communicated Promotes harmonious employee relations while guiding and coaching employees, supervisors, and other managers Works with employees on a daily basis to ensure that all Cando’s safety policies are adhered to with a focus on operational practices, identifying potential hurdles, targeting inconsistencies and aligning the services of the operations to meet customer needs Prepares and implements employee development plans; ensures all employees have adequate training to perform their role

Management and Administration

Develops and maintains capital, operating budgets, and manages resource requirements Develops cost and performance benchmarks and ensures appropriate tracking mechanisms for fuel, training, and locomotive maintenance etc. are in place Develops and maintains a staffing plan to ensure site is staffed appropriately to meet the immediate and long term needs of the operation Implements plans for managing continuous improvement and growth, and ensures opportunities for providing additional services for the customer are pursued Ensures compliance with legislation, regulations, policies, etc. as they relate to the services and employees Manages the relationship with the customer

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Communicates effectively both orally and in writing with people of all backgrounds, levels of comprehension including managers, employees, customers, and the public Demonstrates initiative to work with others to foster a respectful workplace; creates a work environment that is open to maintaining positive relationships Considerable knowledge of modern principles, practices, and techniques in motivating employees and building successful working teams Understanding of the principles of efficient service delivery and systems compliance Demonstrates innovation and responsibility in the decision making process Ability to implement best practices in skill development, training, and service delivery which will be sustainable Strong administrative, technical, and operational competence Proficient in a Microsoft Word, Excel, and Outlook with the skill to adapt easily to other software systems Ability to obtain and maintain all necessary certification and meet all safety and customer requirements including clear drug and alcohol testing; hold and maintain a valid provincial driver’s license

Education & Experience

Minimum of ten (10) years’ experience managing in a heavy industrial environment; rail experience in both industrial and road service applications is an asset Experience in managing for efficiency and effectiveness in a fast-paced environment Experience working with financial information and preparing budgets Able to acquire and maintain CROR certification either as a Conductor or Locomotive Engineer
