Title of Course

VISA 1Q98 Introduction to Visual Culture

Overview of visual culture, its vocabulary, technologies and structures within varied cultural contexts. Problems of meaning, functions of visual culture in contemporary society, the role of galleries and museums, and the impact of imagery in advertising, popular media and consumer culture. Contemporary critical methodology. Lectures, seminar, 3 hours week. Note: TA contract for this course will be 120 hours.

Compensation 

Teaching Assistant, Course Coordinator and Lab Demonstrator positions are paid according to the qualifications that the employee holds. 

· Employees who do NOT hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the undergraduate rate - $ per hour. 

· Employees who hold a 4-year honours degree or a 3-year pass degree will be paid the graduate rate - $ per hour. 

· In cases where additional duties are required as part of a Teaching Assistant’s duties, these hours shall be compensated at the appropriate Teaching Assistant rate. 

Duties 

The duties and responsibilities of the Teaching Assistant shall be in accordance with Article 22 of the CUPE Local 4207, Unit 1, Collective Agreement. These are made up of scheduled contact time with students and non-classroom time (including preparation of seminar material, student consultation, marking or grading, examination proctoring, attending lectures, holding office hours, and other course administration as may be required.

Qualifications 

1. Applicants must have a 4-year Honours BA degree in Visual Arts or Art History or a VISA 3-year complete with a minimum of 80% achieved in the course; and

2. Applicants must have a minimum of three full courses in art history and/or visual culture with at least an 80% average in those courses; and
3. Applicants must be experienced in using technology for teaching, especially web-based applications such as

Brightspace, Sakai, blogs or Moodle required; and

4. Applicants must be at least third- or fourth-year students currently enrolled in a DEGREE, or who have completed a DEGREE or equivalent; and 

5. The successful applicant must have effective communication skills including the ability to explain subject material to students, be punctual in attending classes, and be able to meet appropriate deadlines.
