The Position

Reporting to the K-12 Education Manager, the position works with other staff and agencies within the shishalh Nation and outside the community to develop and implement holistic learning & educational programs. The position is responsible for assisting in the creation of innovative and culturally grounded learning for individual children and youth, as well as small group programming, as required. This is an on-call position.

 

The Candidate

  • Assist students, individually and in small groups, with learning activities and/or independent study projects based on identified needs and priorities. 
  • Observe and document learner strengths, achievements and needs to communicate student progress, providing information to Education Case Managers, families, and SD46 staff via formal/informal communications as appropriate.
  • Operate or assist students in operating personal computers and other specialized instructional equipment/technology as required to support learning. 
  • Prepare Program plan activities by gathering resources, booking venues and confirming guest facilitators/knowledge holders/Elders, purchasing supplies, drafting budgets for approval, etc.
  • Facilitate group programming, organize and participate in field trips as Nation COVID-19 health and safety protocols allow, document attendance, take photos, and complete health and safety checks and program paperwork/reporting as required. 
  • Participate in meetings, planning and liaising with CMS and Education teams, families, and SD46 staff.
  • Perform all other tasks within the scope of the position and as assigned.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Abilities

  • Minimum diploma or bachelor’s degree preferred – particularly in an Education-related program (an equivalent combination of education, training and experience will be considered).
  • A comprehensive understanding of First Nations K-12 students and First Nations issues in British Columbia.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain respect for and from students. 
  • Ability to keep accurate records.
  • Ability to maintain the confidentiality of sensitive information seen or heard. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Minimum of two years working in or in a supporting role in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of current learning and student development theories would be an asset.
  • Demonstrated experience using learning strategies with learners with complex learning needs.
  • A valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle are preferred.
  • Leadership and problem-solving skills; Instructional and facilitation skills.
  • Strong Communication skills (written, verbal, listening) with children, families and professionals.
  • Demonstrated sensitivity, respect and a non-judgmental attitude. Strong organizational skills.
  • Must be able to successfully complete a Criminal Record Check – including a vulnerable sector check.
  • Willingness to learn about shíshálh cultural protocols and traditions.
