This is a temporary replacement position for a bargaining unit employee. Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement.
Reporting to the Director, Henry Bernick Entrepreneurship Centre, the incumbent designs, develops and implements student and community programming and events in the Peter B. Moore Changemaker Space. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:
Student Engagement
• Developing content and materials, coordinating, marketing and hosting maker space events, on campus and virtually and providing technical support to events where required
• Supporting students and clients utilizing the Maker space
• Supporting students who want to start a business and require access to Maker Space resources by first identifying their business needs and offering resources, knowledge and support to help them achieve their goals
• Supporting faculty in utilizing the technology within the space to foster student engagement
• Building and fostering student engagement by liaising with college partners and departments (GCSA, Peer Mentors and The International Centre) to create events, collaborations for podcasts, workshops and experiential activities
• Researching and staying current in order to share innovative ways for students across all campus locations to access workshops, videos, and virtual experiences and inspiring and mentoring them to realize their potential through building out entrepreneurial ideas
• Analyzing trends in student engagement in the Maker Space by analyzing gaps where engagement is lower, reviewing user surveys for specific events/use that was lower and investigating where there are opportunities to strengthen engagement and bringing forward recommendations for the marketing plan to Director
Makerspace coordination and support
• Providing technical support for Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship department
• Coordinating and monitoring the budget for the Maker Space, including the procuring materials, technology, and supplies required for operating the maker space, providing proof of purchases, supporting the financial services advisor on PCard reconciliation, supporting the creation of purchase orders, and invoicing and reporting on the budget at year end
• Providing support with and demonstrating the use of technology within the space; explaining and demonstrating how to code specific programs, completing basic rapid prototype development based on business solutions on entrepreneurial concepts and ideas and supporting students in their project goals related to curriculum-based learning outcomes
• Explaining and demonstrating the use of machinery, tools and space resources to students and clients of the space
• Investigating technical errors and rectifying software or hardware malfunctions/technical challenges that prevent the incumbent and/or student from continuing with a project
• Assisting Director with recruiting and hiring coop students each semester
• Onboarding coop students and demonstrating tasks within the Maker Space and triaging performance concerns to manager where/when applicable
• Overseeing and providing functional guidance to coop students and assigning tasks based on operational need/goals of the department
Community engagement
• Developing, supporting and facilitating external workshops for industry partners
• Filming and editing events and posting to department social media accounts and YouTube in consultation with the Marketing and Communications department
• Creating marketing materials in support of Maker Space, its events and workshops
• Preparing, recording and editing podcasts on behalf of the Maker Space and soliciting topics / content / subject matter relevant to current trends
• Building partnerships and collaborating with external organizations through marketing, promotions and community outreach to increase awareness of the space, increasing donations and funding in support of the space, creating networking opportunities for students, and fostering relationship building between the Maker Space and external organizations
• Collaborating with other college departments to develop and facilitate workshops and activities for college wide events
• Connecting with faculty and alumni to integrate thought leadership into the Maker Space
Qualifications:
• Successfully completed a two-year postsecondary diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to, Computer Programmer Analyst or another related field of study
• A minimum of three years’ experience in a similar role including supporting students and student engagement, event coordination, supporting technology, using a laser cutter, 3D printers and cricut
• Creative with a background in art would be an asset
• Entrepreneurship background would be an asset
• Excellent oral and written communication skills
• Graphic design skills
• Experience working with students and experience in supporting student engagement and support
• Computer skills in Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, MS Teams); proficiency with Airtable, Adobe Premier, Canva, Eventbrite, Basecamp, Slack, Discord, Pheedloop an asset
• Demonstrated experience in a role where duties included video editing and production
