About the Opportunity

Located in Antigonish, St. Martha's Regional Hospital provides inpatient, outpatient, emergency, and community-based services. It has beds in addition to a 23 bed Veteran’s Unit. The hospital is well-equipped with diagnostic and treatment services.

The St Martha's Regional Hospital is seeking a physician to join their team and provide Geriatric care. As a Geriatrician you will work collaboratively with a great team of comprehensive healthcare providers across Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and other specialties.

There are opportunities for teaching available with academic appointment through Dalhousie University’s Faculty of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. There is a Family Medicine Residency Program on site in Antigonish through the Dalhousie Medical School. Medical students from any medical school nation-wide and world-wide may come to Antigonish for electives in Palliative Care. Research opportunities are also available.

Responsibilities
  • Work with our multidisciplinary Collaborative Teams to provide consultation and leadership in care of frail elderly on our inpatient Geriatric Assessment and Rehab Unit, inpatient service and outpatient clinic.
  • The provider will support community hospitals in the region and have an opportunity to further develop the service within the zone. It will also involve participation in our stroke program for acute stroke care and stroke rehab.
  • We have strong affiliation with Dalhousie University Division of Geriatric Medicine, in particular with the Nova Scotia Health Frailty Network in the implementing frailty in the Emergency Department.
  • Participate in on-call coverage with colleagues from the Department of Internal Medicine.
  • Be part of Nova Scotia Health’s Division of Geriatric Medicine and adjunct appointment and research opportunities with Dalhousie University’s Division of Geriatric Medicine.

Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of Geriatric Medicine training as part of Internal Medicine training OR Care of Elderly (COE) Certification in addition to Family Medicine CCFP.
    • all family physicians must have membership with the College of Family Physicians of Canada (CFPC)
    • all applicants must be eligible for licensure with the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (CPSNS)
    • all specialists must be eligible for certification with the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC)
    • membership with the Canadian Medical Protective Association (CMPA)
