2. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Read and interpret blueprints or welding process specifications.
• Operate manual or semi-automatic welding equipment to fuse metal segments using processes such as gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW), gas metal arc welding (GMAW), flux-cored arc welding (FCAW), plasma arc welding (PAW), shielded metal arc welding (SMAW), oxy-acetylene welding (OAW), resistance welding and submerged arc welding (SAW).
• Operate manual or semi-automatic flame-cutting equipment.
• Operate metal shaping machines such as brakes, shears and other metal straightening and bending machines.
• Repair worn parts of metal products by welding on extra layers.
• Required to removal metal and/or prepare materials for welding by gouging and grinding.
• Ensures all welding equipment is clean and functional.
• Assist with the maintenance and repair of welding equipment.
• May adjust welding heads and tooling according to work specifications.
3. PREREQUISITES
3.1. Education
• Be a 2nd or 3rd year registered apprentice
3.2. Experience
• 1-2 years of directly related work experience.
3.3. Other
• As a condition of employment, employees are required upon hire to sign a Drug-Free Workplace Agreement, a Conflict of Interest Agreement, and Confidentiality and Invention Agreement.
4. COMPETENCIES
• Ability to interpret welding process specifications.
• Ability to operate manual or semi-automatic, fully automated welding equipment.
• Ability to read and interpret welding blueprints, drawings specifications, manuals and processes.
• Can examine welds and ensure they meet standards and/or specifications.
• Works well with others trades and co-workers through effective and written communication.
5. LEVEL OF AUTHORITY
• This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
• Position has latitude to apply judgment in immediate work environment with guidance from established guidelines and standards.
• Issues of a more complex nature or beyond the scope of the position are referred to the immediate supervisor.
6. RELATIONSHIPS
6.1. Internal: Interacts with other trades, supervisors, and managers for the purpose of providing or receiving routine information in regards to their needs. May be required to perform similar work in various departments while taking direction from other leads/foremen/supervisors.
6.2. External: Interacts with clients/vendors as requested by immediate supervisor.
7. WORK ENVIRONMENT
7.1. Physical Requirements
• Shop environment may be noisy or dusty and have materials that may be dirty.
• May stand for long periods of time or work within confined spaces.
• May be required to use various types and sizes of ladders.
• May be required to lift and move items that weigh over 20 kilograms.

8.1. Time Management
• Undertakes effective daily planning and completes tasks on time.
• Maintains a professional attitude under time constraints, multiple tasks and changing priorities.
8.2. Accuracy
• Work is performed safely, neatly, and accurately.
• The outcome of the work is complete, error free, and within safety standards.
8.3. Communication Skills
• Appropriately safeguards confidential information.
• Understands and follows written and oral directions.
• Able to communicate ideas and provide clear explanations to co-workers and supervisor.
• Has a positive working relationship with other staff and is willing to work toward the department’s goals and timelines.
8.4. Quantity and Quality of Work
• Consistently produces error free work within appropriate timeframe.
